It seems that the Jonathan Papelbon era in Washington is over. After Jonathan Papelbon had continued to struggle, he went to Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo and requested to be released. He announced today that the release was granted.
The Washington Nationals made a corresponding move to the roster by recalling Reynaldo Lopez, who were scheduled to start Saturday night against the Atlanta Braves.
When asked about the release, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said, “There wasn’t a real fit anymore.” He continued, “ Didn’t know where to use him.”
Papelbon is now a free agent and is allowed to sign with any team. The Nationals, however, are responsible for the remainder of his contract for this year.
In his 37 appearances this season, he had a record of 2-3 with an ERA of 4.37 and had 19 saves in 22 chances. He most recently blew a save on July 26 during a game between the Washington Nationals and the Cleveland Indians. The Nationals had a 6-4 lead in the 9th inning, but Jonathan Papelbon failed to retire any of the five batters he faced, and the Washington Nationals lost the game 7-6.
Since he has been with the Nationals, it has been rough as he has blown many saves. When they got him last season at the trade deadline, it became worse because he was one of the primary reasons why the Nationals blew their NL East lead. What will be interesting to see is where he ends up because it seems like he has been cancer in every clubhouse he has been in. In all honesty, he needs to be on a team that has excellent management and can pull him in.
