When it comes to preseason football, there are many things to watch. Your favorite player, up and coming rookies, and coaching staffs are all things that we keep our eyes on. The 2015 NFC East Champion, Washington Redskins, begin defense of their title tonight. Here are 3 things to watch tonight against the Atlanta Falcons.
Rush defense. The Redskins run defense was one of the worst in the league in 2015. The rush repeatedly gashed them week after week. They finished ranked 26th in total rush defense and 31st in opponents yard per attempt. In order to make a stronger defense of their division title and farther push in the playoffs their must be an added effort at stopping the run. Watch and see how DC Joe Berry has improved the run defense of the Washington Redskins.
Keith Marshall. If Marshall gets significant playing time tonight, keep your eyes on this kid. He is making big strides in camp and the Redskins could have a very good 2 headed monster in the backfield in 2016. Teaming up with Matt Jones, Marshall could provide power and speed while providing a rest for Jones. The Redskins have not had a powerful 2-headed backfield since 2012 with Alfred Morris and QB Robert Griffin III. Watch tonight to see if Marshall is ready to be the number 2 back in 2016.
Secondary. The secondary of the Washington Redskins is much improved in 2016. They added the likes of CB Josh Norman and DB David Bruton in free agency. They have, coming back from injury, S Duke Ihenacho. They drafted DB Su’a Cravens, who has been a beast thus far in camp. All of these to go along with veterans S DeAngelo Hall and CB Bashaud Breeland make up a stronger, revamped secondary. If these guys can shut down some of the best receivers in the league the Redskins should be a strong defense to deal with.
2016 begins tonight. You may not get a long chance to view some of the above, since it is only game 1. but at least we should get a taste. The 2016 Redskins are getting no respect from the outside and that is just fine. Keep your eye on these 3 things tonight. They will make a difference in 2016. HTTR!!
