With the era of John Cena slowly winding down, the age of Roman Reigns has begun and has firmly entrenched “The Big Dog” as the lynchpin of the WWE. Depending on who you ask, Reigns is either the worst thing to happen to the wrestling world since John Cena or he is the young Atlas that will carry the company into the future.

Roman is now entering the 50/50 crowd split of love and hate, which is better than where he once was when only about 10% of the fans cheered for him. Reigns continue to improve in all facets of his wrestling game. If you don’t know who Roman Reigns is, he is a part of the incredible Samoan dynasty that has been present in the WWF/WWE for over 30 years (and, oh by the way, he is the cousin of the most electrifying superstar of all time, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).

I continually refer to Reigns as the LeBron James of wrestling, the best at what he does but fans will always have something negative to say about him. Regardless of your stance on Roman, he is the main pillar of success for WWE moving forward.

Reigns is the leading merchandise seller of all full-time talent, including the likes of Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Finn Balor and the returning Hardy Boyz. His matches, regardless of who he faces, are always a spectacle to watch and have that “big fight feel” about them.

He could open the show with the first match of the night, but he consistently proves that he is the Main Event, no matter when he appears in the broadcast. His new saying is “This is my yard now” after beating and retiring The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33, the event in which Taker was 23-2 and at one point was undefeated with a 21-0 record at WrestleMania record until falling to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30 in New Orleans.

This has proven to be more than a motto for Reigns….. It’s real life.

Fans don’t like the fact that the corporate higher ups, especially the man with all the say, Vince McMahon, billionaire owner of the WWE, has chosen Reigns to be “The Guy” for the company for the foreseeable future, and, quite frankly, it’s easy to see why.

Roman Reigns came to WWE after ending his collegiate and professional football careers. The WWE has been the only wrestling promotion in which he has worked. He’s the homegrown talent that can do it all and most importantly, he is durable (i.e.: resistant to injury). After Seth Rollins’ unfortunate injury in 2015 (slowing his rise to the pinnacle of the WWE talent) on November 5th at a house show in Dublin Ireland, Reigns was then dubbed “The Guy” by Mr. McMahon.

Going into WrestleMania 32, Roman was one of three main event draws in the company that was not injured (main eventers John Cena, Randy Orton, Seth Rollins and a slew of other wrestlers out and unable to participate at WrestleMania due to injury) once again, proving his durability, reliability and based on the success of WrestleMania 32, his star power.

With a potential match at WrestleMania 34 looming pitting John Cena against Roman Reigns, the two biggest “baby face characters” of the company squaring off with Reigns potentially “retiring” (coming out the victor) John Cena and carrying the company after Cena’s retirement.

With that being said, the WWE is ABSOLUTELY Roman’s yard now and he’s here for the long haul, like it or not…..A durable, reliable and charismatic talent who always comes up big in every match, regardless of the outcome.

Roman Reigns is now and for the foreseeable future, the lynchpin of the WWE…. And of that there is no doubt.

One Reply to “Why Roman Reigns Is Paramount to the Success of WWE”

  1. Really insightful article. I agree that the a large part of the WWE’s future success rests on the shoulders of Reigns. I also like the allegory of Reigns retiring Cena, he’s got so much going on outside of the WWE, this could be a breath of fresh air for him as well.
