We are just wrapping up Match Day 2 of the Group Stages in Qatar, which means we are getting closer to the knockout stage and crowning a champion.

So far, there have been some crazy results in games and things we expected and didn’t expect.

France became the first defending champ since 2010 to advance to the knockout stages. Iran is qualified as long as they don’t lose against US.

Japan knocked off Germany 2-1, Saudi Arabia knocked off Argentina 2-1.

Group A

Netherlands sits on 4 points with wins against Senegal and a draw against Ecuador, it is virtually a tie at the top of the group with Ecuador.

Ecuador need to draw or win against Senegal and they will advance to the knockout group.  Both can still win the group. Netherlands just need a result against Qatar and they will advance.

My Picks: Netherlands and Senegal

Group B

England sits on 4 points Iran on 3 points and USA on 2 points.  Wales is sitting on one point and it will be awfully difficult for them to advance to the knockout stages.

Iran plays USA and only need a draw or win to advance and USA needs to win in order to advance. England gets in with a win or draw and Wales needs help.

They need to beat England and hope that USA-Iran end in a draw, if it does not end in a draw they would need to beat England by four or more goals.

My Picks: England and USA

Group C

Poland are sitting on four points after beating Saudi Arabia 2-0 and drawing against Mexico.

Argentina who lost their first match to Saudi Arabia are sitting second. Saudi Arabia sit at 3 points as well with their shocking win over Argentina.

Mexico has one point and will need help. Mexico will need to beat Saudi Arabia and hope that the Poland Argentina game does not end in a tie.

Even if it doesn’t, and Argentina wins, then Poland and Mexico will be sitting on four points and goal differential will come into play. The easiest way for El Tri to advance is for them to win and for Poland to win.

My Picks: Poland and Saudi Arabia

Group D

France are already through to the round of 16, Australia is in the prime position to advance as all they need is a draw or win in their last match against Denmark.

If Denmark win they will be through, barring anything major happening with Tunisia upsetting France.

My Picks: France, Australia

Group E

Spain has the upper hand with four points, followed by Japan and Costa Rica with three points and Germany needing help with only one point. Germany needs to win and have Spain and Japan end in a draw.

Costa Rica, with their shocking victory over Japan, proved to be the pivotal point in their run as now they advance with a win over Germany but also will advance with a draw if Spain beats Japan.

Japan will advance with a win or a draw as long as Germany and Costa Rica end in a draw.

My Picks: Spain, Japan

Group F

By far the most mysterious groups of all. Belgium had an easy draw and all they had to do was hold on against Morocco and they would be in a prime position, now they sit on three points and Croatia and Morocco sit on four.

Belgium can advance with a win over Croatia and they can advance with a draw as long as Morocco does not beat Canada.

My Picks Belgium, Morocco

Group G

Brazil is already through to the round of 16 and Switzerland sit in a very good position with three points and their last match against.

If Switzerland wins against Serbia, they will be through as the second team, a draw as long as Brazil wins or draws against Cameroon.

If Switzerland draw and Cameroon beat Brazil by more than one goal, then Switzerland will be eliminated.

My Picks Brazil, Switzerland

Group H

Portugal with two wins in their first two games have secured their spot in the round of 16. Ghana who was up 2-0 only to see South Korea roar back to tie it at 2-2 ended up getting a goal to win 3-2 and puts themselves in the driver seat.

Ghana will play Uruguay if they win or draw that game they will advance so long as South Korea does not beat Brazil.

My Picks Portugal, Ghana
