You can only go as far as the people you associate with. If your circle is surrounded by folks that don’t bring any value to your situation, there’s no point. It truly defeats the point of keeping them around because they are likely to cause more harm than good. One artist who has always been mindful of the company around her is Yuki Shundo.

Yuki Shundo has accumulated a large fan base since erupting into the music scene. She has advanced in popularity and quality within Pop/R&B music. The desire to create music that feels current and timeless is something Yuki succeeds in doing in her new single “Follow My Heart.”

Yuki had a conversation with us and answered our distinctive 8 Questions. Check it out below.

INSC: Tell us about “Follow My Heart” how did it all come about?

Yuki Shundo: It’s a funny story. As I was writing a song, I told myself, ‘Follow my heart, and it will come out… And I was humming one day, and it came out naturally with the melody and words I was always saying. The rest went smoothly. I wrote down how I felt and wrote everything down with the melody and lyrics. That process was pretty fast. Also, the choreography of this song went very smoothly. Words do attract energy and inspiration.

INSC: Who are some artists that influence you and want to work with in the future?

Yuki Shundo: I’m not attached to specific genres, artists, etc. I get attached to songs that inspire me. There are many amazing artists on the planet. If I name artists I want to work with, that would be too many.

I could name many artists, but I grew up listening to and being inspired by Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Marah Carey, Celine Dion, etc. – Their songs take me somewhere. I always feel like I’m with them in the room. I also love the style of Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, and the list. Their rhythms, sound, and energies that’s my roots.

INSC: What projects do you have coming up, and can you give us any info on them?

Yuki Shundo: I am working on 20 songs and am excited about one precisely. I worked with a cellist, and that was quite a beautiful experience. When is this one coming up?

INSC: What’s your proudest moment to date as an artist?

Yuki Shundo: Before I entered the music industry, I never knew I could write a song. As I started to try, it came out naturally through experimenting with the rhythm. I keep going for a while when I start, and I’m very focused. I am structuring not only for the melody and lyrics but also creating the music part.

A significant factor is, even for the music making, I begin to see how I want the sound, the moment, and balance. That makes me feel great to find out what direction I want for my music.

INSC: Are there any upcoming artists on your radar right now that we should check?

Yuki Shundo: It’s interesting how the music industry is getting mixed up worldwide. K-pop is getting popular in the U.S. I am happy to see international collaborations. Check out some international artists that are playing in the mainstream.

INSC: What albums are on heavy rotation for you currently?

Yuki Shundo: I enjoy listening to one single and on to another. I want to see how storylines shift between the songs. I usually listen to singles by artists like Charlie Puth, Mariah Carey, and Adele and switch up songs. But I should look into some albums out there.

INSC: What do you like to do when you’re not making music?

Yuki Shundo: A part of my grounding process is simply enjoying my day with my dog – Star. No matter how busy I am, I never miss out on playing time with my dog at the beach once a week.

INSC: Name Three things you can’t live without when in the studio.

Yuki Shundo: I have to be comfortable to feel free. Room-temperature water, comfortable clothes, and bare feet (when recording) is needed.
