Let’s talk about online weed store Canada.

You can type into a search engine something like “buy cannabis online” or “buy edibles online”, and the search engine will give you a large number of sites willing to sell you the product legally. But let’s look at different companies.

Canopy Growth

In September 2019, they were valued at $8.65 billion. In December 2017, Canopy Growth partnered with a Danish company (one of the largest cannabis producers in Europe) to form Spectrum Cannabis Denmark. Spectrum Cannabis was licensed to establish a 40,000-square-meter cannabis plant in Odense, Denmark.

This investment should already yield good results, as Spectrum Cannabis created its first product in September 2019.

The canopy also acquired buy edibles online grower Caffeine, which is a Spanish company that grants the right to grow and distribute cannabis containing more than 0.2% THC for medicine.

In addition, Canopy Growth also bought CBD, a British brand operating in the wellness market. This expansion, along with the certification of Storz & Bickel’s international vaporizer facility in Germany and the recent acquisition of German dronabinol producer C3, has strengthened its European footprint.

Aurora Cannabis

A second Canadian company, Aurora Cannabis, has also made great efforts to expand in the European Union. Aurora has formed a joint venture with Alfred Pedersen & Søn, based in Denmark, called Aurora Nordic Cannabis, which has already received a license to build a 92,000-square-meter fully automated cannabis production facility. Like the Danish Canopy Growth plant, Aurora was expected to have its first profitable crop in late 2019.

In addition, Aurora also bought Portuguese marijuana grower Gaia Pharm and received approval from the Portuguese Ministry of Health to build a cannabis plant. The first phase of this expansion should be completed in 2020, when the plant’s capacity will reach nearly 2,000 kilograms of cannabis per year. After the second phase of expansion, the company should increase its capacity to 4,000 kilograms per year.

The Canadian-registered company has already protected its European assets by obtaining the right to sell its cannabis-derived oils in German and British pharmacies.

Tilray

Tilray is a Canadian cannabis giant that has opened a $20 million research and agricultural center in Portugal. Tilray is licensed to grow and distribute by the Portuguese government and can sell its products in pharmacies throughout the European Union.

In August 2019, Tilray announced an agreement to export a $3.3 million wholesale shipment of medical cannabis from Portugal to Germany. The agreement Tilray signed with Germany’s Cannamedical was finalized in the fall of 2019 and was the first time Portuguese cannabis was shipped to Germany.

Atlas Growers

Atlas Growers, based in Edmonton, Canada, plans to invest at least $27 million (€24.3 million) to grow cannabis indoors in Denmark. Atlas Growers will open a 15,000 m2 cannabis plant with 36 individual climate-controlled rooms in Funen, Denmark. The company has been licensed to grow by the Danish Department of Medicine and expects its first harvest in early 2020.

In addition, the Canadian firm will also open a 1,800 m2 technology lab that will meet EU standards for pharmaceutical production.

Aphria

Another Canadian company called Aphria will produce cannabis in Europe through a partnership with the Danish firm Schroll Medical. The partnership will grow and distribute certified medical cannabis within the EU. Schroll Medical was licensed to grow and distribute medical cannabis. Cultivation began in the spring of 2019, and the company expects its first commercial products to be available in early 2020.
