The highly anticipated LA Comic Con 2024 buzzed with excitement as renowned author Chrys Phillips made a dazzling appearance to celebrate her best-selling book series, Magic Wars Saga. Fans and newcomers alike gathered to experience the enchanting world that has captivated readers around the globe. This year’s convention featured a thrilling highlight: an exclusive sneak peek of the prequel movie, Zavier and the Nightkeeper.
The sneak peek captivated audiences with stunning visuals and an engaging storyline that delves into the origins of the beloved characters from the Magic Wars universe. The film, comes from DGA nominated and award-winning director Chrys Phillips and explores the untold story of Zavier, – prior to the magic wars inception – an immortal anti-hero grappling with his destiny in a world filled with magic and danger.
“I am beyond thrilled to bring the Magic Wars Saga to life in a new medium,” said Phillips. “Zavier and the Nightkeeper delves deeper into the themes of humanity, familial bonds and the battle between light and darkness. I’m excited for fans to see the prequel unfold on screen and meet new characters.”
The film’s production team, including producers Mikaela Phillips, Elizabeth Navello and and Sandra Beatrice, joined Phillips in attendance over the weekend at the con. Talking to press exclusively, when asked about adapting Phillips’s beloved series, Mikaela responded, “Chrys’s world is rich with detail and emotion however I’ve found the true magic of the series, is seeing how it has helped many of its readership and fans over the years, through providing an escape, courage and relatability amongst its audience. It’s truly special the loyal fandom Chrys has built and fostered and it’s been a long-awaited goal to bring this world to the screen! It’s about capturing the essence of the world she so marvelously created on paper and bringing to life the magic and characters that have captivated readers worldwide for years.”
The cast of Zavier and the Nightkeeper features a talented ensemble, including rising star Deven Fagan in the titular role of Zavier, alongside Jonah Snyder as the mysterious Nightkeeper. Lead actors who were in person included Drew Hutto, Victor Kallett, Traci Larsen, Lukas Stramatos and Neila Currey. Their shared enthusiasm for the project was evident, with Hutto stating, “Chrys has this amazing vision and to be able to create it and bring to life for the people truly feels like a fever dream. I’m truly thankful for her and Mikaela for granting me this type of opportunity.” Larsen further adding her respect and excitement saying,“I’m so grateful to be playing the Potion Mistress amongst such a great cast, helping to bring this story to life. Chrys and Mikaela have been a dream to work with and I can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve been working so hard to create.”
As cosplayers, fans and convention goers explored the convention, they also enjoyed exclusive merchandise and signed copies of Phillips’s Magic Wars books at the MWS booth – booth design staged by Side Door Events. The event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in the magic of the series and engage with the creative minds behind it.
LA Comic Con 2024 proved to be an unforgettable experience, celebrating the intersection of literature and film. The excitement surrounding Zavier and the Nightkeeper has set a new standard for adaptations and has fans eagerly anticipating its 2025 release.
