Liliana Mijangos: The 13-Year-Old Trailblazing Inclusivity in Fashion and Film
At just 13, Liliana Mijangos is redefining what it means to be a creative powerhouse. From portraying a young Olivia Munn in Violet to becoming the youngest designer to showcase at New York and Los Angeles Fashion Weeks, Liliana’s journey is fueled by a mission to make fashion inclusive for all—especially inspired by her sister, Cecilia, who has special needs. Balancing acting, designing, and childhood, she aims to break barriers in both industries, all while encouraging others to believe in themselves, embrace challenges, and strive for a more equal and creative world.
At just 13, you’ve already made your mark in both the entertainment and fashion worlds. How did your journey begin, and what inspired you to pursue both acting and designing?
My journey began at the age of 5. I started out in pageants and enjoyed being on stage. That led me to acting and have enjoyed it since. My inspiration for my designs was my older sister Cecilia. My sister has special needs and is wheelchair bound so it was very hard to find clothes that would be easy to put on and comfortable. I started designing her outfits and became more inspired to pursue my career as a fashion designer.
Your portrayal of young Olivia Munn in Violet was a pivotal moment in your acting career. What did you learn from working on this project, and how has it shaped your approach to acting?
This project was so amazing. Working with the amazing producer/director Justine Bateman was such an honor. I definitely learned a lot from the discipline and the work that is done on a film. It has shaped my approach to acting in such a positive way. It has helped me to be more focused and to analyze any acting job I do and to build a physical and emotional connection.
As the youngest designer to showcase at both New York and Los Angeles Fashion Weeks, what does it mean to you to break barriers in the fashion industry at such a young age?
Breaking the barriers in the fashion industry at such a young age means that anything is possible. There are a lot of challenges being so young in the fashion industry, but I see those challenges as motivation.
Your designs are rooted in inclusivity, inspired by creating clothing for your sister Cecilia. How has this mission shaped your creative process, and what impact do you hope your work has on the fashion industry?
This mission has shaped my creative process because designing accessible fashion that is both stylish and functional is not only a huge part of the design for Cecilia, but for all of the designs I create. I hope the impact my work on the fashion industry is that it fosters a sense of belonging, and ultimately to create a more equal society. I also hope that my work generates positivity and is accessible and accommodating to everyone.
Balancing acting, designing, and your personal life must be challenging. How do you manage your time and stay focused on your goals?
I have an amazing family who help to keep me focused. They make sure that I balance my work and personal life. I have my plans/goals written so it helps to keep me organized. I make sure I take time for myself and enjoy my childhood and still focus on my goals.

Inclusivity is a central theme in your designs. What changes would you like to see in the fashion industry, and how do you hope to contribute to that progress?
A change I would like to see in the fashion industry is more inclusivity and promotion of acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, and physical abilities. I hope to contribute to that process by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels a sense of belonging; and that everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and has equal opportunities to participate and contribute.
You’ve already achieved so much at a young age. What advice would you give to other young creatives who want to break into the fashion or entertainment industries?
The advice that I would give young people who aspire to be in the fashion or entertainment industries is to have confidence. Surround yourself with positive people and visualize your success. Don’t give up, and just know that there will be setbacks but those are only opportunities to learn. Become a good learner as you will appreciate the experiences of both success and failure. And most of all believe in yourself and keep a positive outlook.
Your move from Menlo Park to Anaheim must have been a significant change. How has living in Southern California influenced your career and creativity?
I feel that there is not only more opportunity in SoCal, but there is also more support. I have been able to meet and learn from many amazing designers and creators and this has helped immensely with my creativity.
With a growing social media presence, how do you use your platform to connect with fans and share your message of inclusivity and creativity?
I love to engage with fans on my platforms. I always try to encourage meaningful and positive conversations. Social media is a way to build relationships and a way to connect. The message I always spread through my platforms is to believe in yourself and be your true self. There is absolutely no limit to what one can do.
Looking ahead, what are your biggest dreams for the future in both acting and fashion, and what projects are you most excited about?
Looking ahead, my dream for the future in the fashion industry is to showcase my designs at Milan and Paris Fashion Week. For acting, I hope to one day work on a series or sitcom. The project that I am most excited about is NYFW in September. As of right now, I will be showcasing at Runway 7 and International Heritage Fashion in September. I’ll be working hard on my designs and can’t wait to have them seen on the runway!
