History:

The first example, Planet Mephius, was created by Eiji Yokoyama and released by T&E Soft in 1983. Once exclusively available in Japan, this prototype for virtual excursions led to the invention of “escape the room” video games.

In 2007, a Kyoto native named Takao Kato developed the first actual escape game. He was motivated to try something new by the popularity of “escape the room” video games as well as his own yearning for adventure.

Initially, visitors participated in live games at various Japanese taverns and clubs. But, during the following several years, businesses built additional long-term sites all throughout Asia and Europe.

Between 2012 and 2014, escape games finally gained popularity in the US, with numerous businesses finding success in San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, New York City, and Nashville. There are now more than 50,000 thrilling escape rooms in the world! They serve as enjoyable bonding experiences and team-building exercises for businesses.

Look Everywhere—At, Within, and Below

  • When you first enter a new space, check everything out! What starts? What things include hidden objects? These first items are hints that will help you progress through the game as time moves swiftly.
  • Don’t forget to explore beneath carpets, peruse books on shelves, and get up up and personal with all those wall art!

Identify Patterns

Sometimes there is no clear answer. Look attentively at the hints, items, and wall prints to spot any patterns or discrepancies. They could hold the solution to a problem!

Make use of everyone’s talents

Some team members could excel at jigsaw puzzles while others excel at seeing patterns in a collection of data. Help each other shine and work where your skill sets fit since escaping is a team effort!

Organize your puzzles and used clues.

A puzzle or hint is often not needed again in the game once it has been solved or used. Items that are kept in a garbage pile are a clear indication to the team that they have been utilized. This is necessary so that individuals won’t waste time attempting to solve riddles that have already been solved.

Keep upbeat!

Seeing the minutes pass while unsure of what to do next might be depressing. Don’t give up however! Escape rooms are all about teamwork and having a good time with the group.
