It was announced earlier this week where the 2017 Royal Rumble will be held. It was first reported by various Texas media outlets and later confirmed by WWE through a press release that the 2017 Royal Rumble will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. It will be the third time that Texas has hosted the Royal Rumble, and the second time it will be held in the Alamodome.
It should be noted that this is the first time in the twenty-eight year history of the event that it has never taken place in the same venue two times. Also, the venue, Alamodome, holds almost 70,000 people and if WWE can sell it out, could end up being a record-breaking event for the WWE. The Royal Rumble began in 1988 and is now considered to be the “Big Four” of WWE PPV’s. In addition to the Rumble, the other three big WWE PPV’s are Wrestlemania, Summerslam, and Survivor Series.
The last time that the WWE held the Royal Rumble at the Alamodome was in 1997. The main event of that card saw Shawn Michaels defeat Psycho Sid for the WWF World Heavyweight title. Also, this was the event where Stone Cold Steve Austin would win the Rumble and would have a shot at the WWF World Heavyweight title at Wrestlemania 13. Also at this event, Hunter Hearst Helmsley or as he known as now as simply Triple H would beat Goldust for the Intercontinental title.
As far as this Royal Rumble, there are a few things I am curious to see happen and I figure we will start to find these things out within the next few months before the event. For starters, the winner of the Royal Rumble is granted a title match in the main event spot at Wrestlemania that is all fine but what title do they get to go for. Back in July, the WWE had a draft and now has two separate brands with two different titles.
The other thing I am curious to see is who will either make their return to WWE or who will make their debut on the main roster. It should be interesting to see how it all pans out over the next few months as we are on the road to Wrestlemania 33.
