Week 7 of the 2023 college football season is over. The Inscriber Magazine will now look at the updated Heisman candidate rankings and it has changed.
Caleb Williams the USC Trojans quarterback had a game to forget against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as he threw three first half interceptions and finished with 199 yards passing, one touchdown, and he got sacked six times. The question now is how far will he fall in the Heisman rankings?
Michael Penix Jr takes over the no.1 spot after the no.7 University of Washington Huskies defeated the no.8 Oregon Ducks in a thriller that nearly went to overtime. He threw for 302 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
Overall in 2023, Penix Jr has thrown for 2,301 yards 20 touchdowns to three interceptions.
As for who is no.2 and even though the Ducks lost. Bo Nix was once again outstanding against the Huskies. He threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns. For the season he has thrown for 1,796 yards, 17 touchdowns and has only been intercepted once.
In the three spot is Williams. While his candidacy did take a hit over the past two weeks, he has time to move his way back up. Also, he was fortunate that Dillon Gabriel and the University of Oklahoma Sooners were on a bye this week.
Williams has thrown for 2,021 yards 23 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Unfortunately for the dark horse candidate of the Washington State Cougars, quarterback Cameron Ward is now out. As he threw for only 192 yards against the University of Arizona Wildcats, he did not throw a touchdown and was picked off once. Over the past two weeks he has thrown for 389 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
Unlike last week which was a relatively close game, the Cougars got blown out 44-6 by the Wildcats.
Entering the rankings at no.5 is Washington’s wide receiver Rome Odunze. In five of six games this season he has gone over 100 yards receiving, he has a total of 736 yards on 40 receptions and six touchdowns, also he has one carry for 14 yards and a touchdown.
Against the Ducks on Saturday he caught eight passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
