As the 2016 College Football season draws near, teams in the top 10 are still dueling out for spots in the Top 4 for an opportunity to play in the playoffs. Two of the top tens meet up tomorrow in one of the more highly anticipated games of the weekend. #2 Ohio State is set to host #3 Michigan Wolverines in one of the rivalries most important games since 2006.
This rivalry happens to be one of the longer ones in College Football as it dates back to the late 1800’s. Overall, Michigan leads in the head-to-head battle with a record of 58-47-6. The last time this game truly mattered was back in 2006, and many college football pundits are saying when these teams meet on Saturday afternoon that it will loom very large for both teams.
Let us first look at the Michigan Wolverines. They are entering this game with a record of 10-1 and are currently 3rd in the AP Poll. Their only loss this season was just two weeks ago when they were shockingly defeated by Iowa by the score of 14-13. The Wolverines are playing well right now and if they defeat Ohio State on Saturday, could jump them in the rankings and the likelihood of them making the playoffs becomes greater.
Both teams have a lot of advantages coming into the game, but first lets look at the Wolverines. Right off the back, they have a pass defense that could disrupt Ohio State. Throughout the 2016 season, the Buckeyes have had problems of staying consistent through the passing game, and that could become concerning for fans of the Buckeyes.
The reason why it is somewhat concerning for Buckeyes fans is that the Buckeyes are going up against the nation’s best pass defense. However, the Wolverines have not faced someone like J.T. Barrett and while it may not be easy, he may be able to figure out what most teams haven’t been able to figure out.
Overall, the Wolverines defense could cause problems for the Buckeyes as both their run and pass defense are some of the best in the nation.
On the other side, you have the Ohio State Buckeyes. They are also entering this game with a record of 10-1 and currently hold the 2nd spot in the AP Poll. There only loss came roughly a month ago at the hands of the Penn State Nitty Lions by the score of 24-21. Just like the Wolverines, the Buckeyes are also playing well right now that depending on what happens on Saturday when they face the Wolverines, could be playing for a spot in the playoffs.
The Ohio State Buckeyes also have a lot of advantages coming into this game. One advantage is their head coach. Since Urban Meyer took over for the Buckeyes, he is 18-1 in November and is 4-0 against the Michigan Wolverines. He also holds the highest winning percentage in FBS with coaches who have coached for more than ten years at 85.4%.
In his college coaching career, Urban Meyer is 50-8 in November games. Another advantage for the Buckeyes is they have new players playing. Unlike the Wolverines who have 18 seniors who are playing on Saturday, a good majority of the Buckeyes are playing for the first time in this rivalry.
These Buckeyes/Wolverine games are always a hard hitting, tough battle. I don’t suspect this game to be anything short of what this rivalry has brought as there is a lot on the line.
