ARLINGTON- There are always surprise picks in the NFL draft that leave fans wondering. Sometimes it’s “why did you pick that player, we don’t need him” and other times the reaction is “That player is flat-out garbage”. Sometimes teams make selections that puzzle fans and reporters alike. Then there are the really good surprises that make some fans cheer and others turn off their televisions.
Are fans in for some exciting picks that will leave them dazed and confused? There is always a distinct possibility of selections that lead to questions. Here are potential surprises that fans won’t see coming tonight. These do not reflect the typical mock draft but rather serve as a platform to discuss all possibilities.
Biggest surprise: Pick 2- New York Giants- Quenton Nelson– Guard- Notre Dame- The New York Giants lost Justin Pugh to the Arizona Cardinals. Maybe Nelson should be the pick because he is one the top overall talents and Eli Manning needs a pass protector.
Second biggest surprise: Pick 4- Cleveland Browns- Calvin Ridley– Wide Receiver- Alabama- The Browns are taking a quarterback with the first overall pick. Although the generally accepted notion is the Browns will select running back Saquon Barkley or defensive end Bradley Chubb, Ridley is in play. If Baker Mayfield goes first overall and starts at some point in 2018, maybe it’s a good idea to give him another big time weapon. There is also Corey Coleman’s inconsistency to take into account.
Third Biggest Surprise: Pick 11- Miami Dolphins- Lamar Jackson-Quarterback- Louisville- The Dolphins may keep Ryan Tannehill on a short leash. If Mayfield, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are selected in the top 10 as expected, this leaves few options for Miami. Might as well take a quarterback early on before all of the good ones are gone. This pick will certainly make a lot of fans shaking their heads but it could be worth a chance.
