Will Insurgent be able to top Divergent at the box office? It’s not known if it can surpass the original films take, but many are forecasting the film will debut with a cool $57 million on opening weekend. This will place Insurgent $3 million ahead of last year’s Divergent.

Divergent, the predecessor to Insurgent, took in $54.6 million last March, and went on to gross more than $150 million worldwide. Naturally, the decision was made to release Insurgent during the same time frame, due in large part to little competition at the box office.

So, why the increased projections for Insurgent? You can credit that to the sudden rise in Shailene Woodley, whose breakout role in The Fault In Our Stars catapulted her into one of Hollywood’s elite.

In addition to Woodley, Insurgent also features Kate Winslet, Theo James, and series newcomer Octavia Spencer. Also included in the cast is Miles Teller, who will look to carry momentum after his masterful performance in Whiplash.

The Divergent series is a series of films based on the Divergent trilogy written by Veronica Roth.

With Insurgent set to release on March 20th, the sequel Allegiant will hit theaters on March 18th, 2016. The film will be split into two parts with the second half hitting theaters a year later. So far, the Divergent series has proven to be a hit for Lionsgate, and with three films on the horizon it has no intention of slowing down.
