According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, San Francisco 49ers defensive end, Aldon Smith has been suspended nine games for violation the NFL’s personal and substance-abuse policy.

Smith, 24, a former first-round pick out of Missouri, was suspended five games for his publicized false bomb threat at LAX and four games for a DUI and weapons charge in Miami Beach, which resulted in 12 days in jail. Smith will be eligible to rejoin the team on November 10.

While Smith can still be with the team, Smith will not be allowed to practice, play or get paid during his nine-game ban.

One of the key components in the Niners, Smith will miss key games against the Cardinals (Week 3), Eagles (Week 4), Rams (Week 6 and 9), Broncos (Week 7) and Saints (Week 10)

Since coming into the league, Smith has registered the third most number of sacks in NFL history for a player in his first three years with 42.0
