It’s official! Benedict Cumberbatch is locked in to play the title role in Marvel’s big screen adaptation of Dr. Strange.
Talk of Cumberbatch’s involvement with the project started circulating shortly before the announcement of Marvel’s Phase 3 movie lineup. At the time of the reveal, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige advanced the notion that anything unmentioned at the time was basically unconfirmed. However, this isn’t to say some stage of negotiations weren’t already underway .
According to Marvel.com, the movie will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. As the “Sorcerer Supreme”, Dr. Strange becomes Earth’s protector from dangers that lurk in the mystical realms.
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,“ said Feige “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
The movie will be directed by Scott Derrickson, based on the screenplay written by Jon Spaihts. Derrickson‘s recent projects, Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil, dealt with the dark, supernatural themes which may give him a certain edge when dealing with the mystical elements of the story.
With the quality talent that Marvel continues to introduce into their universe, I am very excited to hear and see more about the other projects in the Phase 3 lineup. In particular, I cannot wait to see Cumberbatch’s turn as Dr. Strange when it opens in theaters November 4th of 2016.
