Have you ever wanted to explore the Dominican Republic in a way most people don’t?

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, they think of the popular hot spot Punta Canta. They also tend to invest in all-inclusive resort style vacations.

And while there’s nothing wrong with this approach to vacationing, it’s good to know there is a lot more to the Dominican Republic than that. In fact, a narrow peninsula off the north coast called Samana offers vacationers beautiful scenery and plenty to do.

Today we’re going to share with you some of the best things to do in Samana, so you can make your vacation to the paradise that is Dominican Republic one-of-a-kind.

1. Hike to El Limón Waterfall

If adventure is what you’re looking for, Samana has you covered. Take a hike through the exciting jungle and end at the breathtaking El Limón waterfall. Dropping an impressive 130 feet from the top of Sierra Samana, you’re sure to appreciate the Dominican Republic’s beauty instantly.

If you want a little more excitement, and less time on your feet, consider signing up for the horseback ride to the waterfall instead. It takes a mere 30 minutes to get there and typically includes a lunch as well.

2. Rest on the Beaches of Playa Rincon

Ranked one of the best off the beaten path beaches in the world, Playa Rincon is located in a remote part of Samana and offers you plenty of sun, shade, and beautiful waters. Not to mention, it is peaceful and relaxing since not many people know about this gem.

The dense forest creeps up to the water’s edge, making it truly unique. In addition, you can snorkel to some stunning coral reefs, hang out in the shallow lagoon, or just catch some rays and love your life.

If you’re looking for more beautiful beaches to enjoy while visiting Samana, don’t forget to check out the likes of La Playita and Playa Bonita while you’re at it.

3. Zip Line Above and Through the Forest

If you’re a real thrill seeker, try zip lining while in Samana. Experience the lush, tropical forests from above as you zip across platforms strategically placed throughout the jungle trees.

If you want to really round out your day of ziplining, consider booking an exclusive treehouse hotel room, complete with swing chairs and a private bath, and stay the night in style while deep within some of nature’s best kept secret locations.

4. Las Galeras

Want a retreat style vacation? If so, consider the long trek out to Las Galeras. This local village has plenty of non-traditional activities to do, such as staying in the yoga and meditation focused Villa Serena.

This waterfront property gives you a chance to experience life from a different angle, and even includes things like water yoga and a raw food diet, prepared by expert chefs aiming to make your food healthy and delicious.

Not to mention, the Playa Rincon beachline runs straight into it, offering other fun activities like snorkeling, swimming, hiking, and more.

5. Get in on the Nightlife

Get into the swing of things while vacationing in Samana and be sure to check out two of the hottest local hotspots that only come to life at night:

  • Gaia Club. This three-story bar has different music playing on every level, complete with their own unique looks.
  • Chi-Chi Piano Bar. This small, hole in the wall bar is a great place for locals and tourists to gel. They have a pianist singing out international tunes all night long, and even give guests a chance to belt out their favorite tunes during karaoke.

If you’re looking for a way to vacation in the Dominican Republic that’s different from what most people do, consider cruising down to Samana and enjoy the paradise many don’t know about.
