Every month, three million children across the United States miss school due to the fear of bullies. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for effective anti-bullying programs that not only protect children but also empower them with the confidence to face such challenges. The Gracie Bullyproof Program stands out in this regard, offering a unique approach that emphasizes non-violent self-defense techniques and verbal assertiveness to help children overcome bullying.
A Non-Violent Approach to Bullying
The Gracie Bullyproof Program has garnered attention from major media outlets such as CNN, ABC, NBC, and Oprah for its innovative and effective methods. Unlike traditional self-defense programs that focus on teaching children to punch or kick, Gracie Bullyproof prioritizes non-violent techniques. The program’s primary goal is to instill unshakable confidence in children aged 5 to 12, enabling them to deter bullies without resorting to violence.
Program Schedule
At Gracie SBC the Gracie Bullyproof classes are designed to cater to different age groups and skill levels, ensuring that each child receives the appropriate training and guidance. The class schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday: Gracie Bullyproof @ 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM
- Saturday:
- Little Champs (ages 5-7) @ 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Building Confidence Through Verbal Assertiveness
One of the core components of the Gracie Bullyproof Program is teaching children to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies. This involves equipping them with the skills to confidently and calmly stand up for themselves without escalating the situation. By mastering these techniques, children learn to handle confrontations with poise and self-assurance, significantly reducing the likelihood of being targeted by bullies.
Leverage-Based Control Holds
In situations where physical self-defense becomes necessary, the Gracie Bullyproof Program teaches children leverage-based control holds. These techniques are designed to neutralize threats without causing harm to the aggressor. By using leverage and body mechanics, children can effectively control and subdue a bully until help arrives, all while minimizing the risk of injury to both parties. This approach aligns with the program’s emphasis on non-violence and responsible self-defense.
The Gracie Bullyproof Rules of Engagement
The Gracie Bullyproof Program is built around five key rules of engagement, which serve as guiding principles for children when dealing with bullies:
- Avoid the fight at all costs. Children are taught to prioritize safety and avoid physical confrontations whenever possible.
- If physically attacked, defend yourself. In the event of a physical assault, children learn to protect themselves using non-violent techniques.
- If verbally attacked, follow the Three T-steps (talk, tell, tackle). This involves addressing the situation verbally, seeking help from an authority figure, and, if necessary, using control holds to neutralize the threat.
- Never punch or kick the bully; establish control and negotiate. The program discourages aggressive responses and instead focuses on establishing control and resolving the situation through negotiation.
- When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate. Children are taught to use the least amount of force necessary and always aim for a peaceful resolution.
