The latest name to be added to the star-studded cast, crew, and production team for upcoming Hollywood movie ‘Freud’s Last Session’ is none other than Enzo Zelocchi, who will be donning his executive producer cap to help bring this exciting, nuanced, and multi-faceted independent movie to the big screen.
Starring Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins in the role of Sigmund Freud, the feature is set to introduce audiences to a fictional meeting between psychoanalyst and atheist Sigmund Freud and author C.S. Lewis, who was a devout Christian. The pair, played by Hopkins and Matthew Goode respectively, will debate religion, science, and the human condition in the setting of Freud’s London home during the eve of World War II.
This fascinating but entirely fictional interaction between two very real historical figures was first imagined by American psychologist Armand Nicholi in his iconic book ‘The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.’
Playwright Mark St. Germain later adapted the tale for the stage, before esteemed director Matt Brown decided to carry it all the way to Hollywood. With such a great concept and a celebrated director already on board, it’s hardly a surprise that prominent talents like Hopkins and Zelocchi were attracted to the project.
The result of this melting pot of vision and creativity is that Variety has dubbed the movie a likely Oscar contender, which is an impressive feat when we consider that the only sneak peek we’ve seen so far is a single production still of Hopkins and Goode in character.
While we may have to wait a little longer to glimpse a trailer of the movie, which is currently on track for release in December of 2023, we are excited to report that Sony Pictures Classics has already picked up a sizable portion of the distribution rights thanks to successful negotiations with Westend Films and CAA Media Finance.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Classics shared in a statement that the movie represents a “fabulous role for Anthony Hopkins as Freud in London during WW2 locking horns with C.S. Lewis,” before continuing, “Freud’s Last Session promises to be a major movie. It is also great to be back in business with our friends at Westend.”
While it is rare for Zelocchi to get involved in the production of a film that he isn’t also directing or starring in, it’s easy to see why the Hollywood multi-talent wouldn’t have been able to resist contributing to this milestone movie project.
Having already garnered almost 300 awards for his movie career so far, Zelocchi will also no doubt be rooting for ‘Freud’s Last Session’ when next year’s Academy Awards season rolls around. Can it give Oppenheimer a run for its money? We’ll just have to wait and find out!
