Multi-hyphenate artist Joshua Turchin is bringing Shakespeare to the iconic venue 54 Below in his latest show. The show called “54 Sings the Bard: Broadway Goes Shakespeare” will be on October 5, 2024. While not his first show at 54 Below, this will be his first show as an adult, having just turned 18 year old at the end of September. Inscriber Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing Joshua about this show.
1. Tell us about your show at 54 Below.
Of course! I’m so excited to be producing and music directing “54 Sings the Bard: Broadway Goes Shakespeare” at 54 Below! It’s a celebration of musicals like “West Side Story”, “Something Rotten”, “&
Juliet”, and more! In addition to performers from Broadway shows like “Wicked”, “Six”, “Lion King”, “How to Dance in Ohio” as well as popular performers known from social media, the band includes musicians from “Water for Elephants” and “Hells Kitchen”.
2. Why did you want to do this show?
I realized how many of my favorite musicals were based on Shakespearian plays, and instantly knew it would be a fun show to put together with my Broadway friends!
3. This is your first solo producing venture. How is the process different from the other shows you’ve done at 54 Below?
When I’ve produced in the past, I’ve always had co-producers to help with ticket sales and promotion, so this time in addition to all of the arrangements, vocal rehearsals, and band rehearsals, making sure the show sells is my responsibility.
4. Is it difficult to be both producer and performer in the show?
I think producing and performing are two different jobs that don’t really overlap, so I don’t find it too difficult.
5. How do you come up with a concept for your shows?
For most of the shows I do, either a friend comes to me with a concept they really want to do, or there’s a concept I’ve been thinking of for a while that I just know I need to do!
6. Do you have any other projects coming up?
I have a few more shows at 54 Below and Greenroom 42 throughout the rest of the year that I’m really excited for including a Halloween show on 10/30 at The Greenroom 42 in NYC! Tickets and more information for that show are on my social media.
7. Where can we follow you on social media?
You can follow me on social media everywhere at @joshuaturchin!
