Being a porn star sure isn’t what it used to be. Where there was once a time that almost all exposure for porn stars was held within the borders of quality video, big budget production, and a (sometimes stiff) pre-written script.
With the popularity and accessibility of the internet, tastes and trends have changed, and have been changing at a breakneck speed. So, as a newer sex symbol and erotic model, how do you keep up with the ever-changing demands of such a demanding market? You get savvy. Lela Star, porn star princess that’s angling for queen describes what it’s like to be a contemporary pornpreneur.
What does it take to stay relevant in the industry these days?
Lela Star: Porn is now a completely different ballgame than it was 20 years ago. To continue to stay relevant now, you have to understand business, you need to be able to easily use technology, and you have to be more of an entrepreneur.
“More of an entrepreneur” What do you mean by that?
Lela Star: Like, it’s not just porn anymore. You don’t just go to a studio, go home, and expect to make enough money to keep your head above water. Now you must be in almost constant interaction with social media platforms. You need an Instagram, a Twitter, a Snapchat… Not only that, but there are several different pornography centered social media platforms as well. You have to consider caming, or escorting, maybe try and secure your own line of erotic products.
So it’s not just sex and money?
Lela Star: Oh god no! You really have to work hard for the exposure you get, mostly because people are asking for a different kind of porn. They don’t want sideburns and fake moans anymore. They want more personalized interaction. Something that feels more real to them. On top of that, anyone with a computer and the desire can get into porn. It’s so easy to stream and there are millions of cam girls, so you have to carve out a niche and constantly elevate your product.
How old were you when you started?
Lela Star: I was 18. I appeared in a few budget films and a hustler spread and it kind of just exploded from there. Since then, I’ve been in more than 170 movies, many magazines, won two awards. I’ve also began a cam service on my personal site, signed a contract with Brazzers.com. I’ve done some non-erotic modeling as well. I’ve really been able to branch out creatively and create a name for myself.
There’s been some controversy over the plastic surgery you’ve underwent, do you have anything to say about that?
Lela Star: [laughs] It was a choice that I made, and I’m not unhappy with it. I have always enjoyed how I looked, both before and after the surgeries. That’s all I will say.
Do you enjoy what you do?
Lela Star: Oh absolutely! It’s hard work, for sure, but I love it. I honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I think that pornography and erotic modeling can be really liberating and empowering if it’s what you really want to do with your life. I’ve found my place and the type of porn I’m producing is definitely the type of porn I want to be making. I get to say when, where, and how- and honestly, how many people have that kind of control when it comes to their jobs? Not only that, but I think that the more fun you’re having, the better quality you create. It’s a lot better to see someone truly enjoying themselves, then to have to sit through an hour of watching some chick just look bored.
So what’s next for you?
Lela Star: Porn? Or social media? Modeling? I have a lot of plans with all of the different aspects of what I do, and I’m really excited to get underway with a few new projects.
