Thor Marvel

Marvel fans were treated to an unexpected surprise on Monday morning. Without any prior notice, Marvel Studios dropped the teaser trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, which will be their third film in 2017. It is set for a November 3rd, 2017 release.

With this new trailer comes plenty of talking points. Fans of the MCU were treated to their first real look at the villainous Hela. We got a glimpse on how Thor gets banished from Asgard and why he is sporting a short haircut instead of his long locks for part of the film. There are a few clips with Loki and the Grandmaster. Then there is the big finish, where Thor and Hulk are set to go head to head, gladiator style!

But despite all of those, there was something else that really stood out. Early on in the trailer, Thor and Hela appear in what looks like a New York City alleyway. Thor throws his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, in Hela’s direction. The hammer, which only those who are worthy are capable of wielding (such as Thor and apparently Vision), is caught mid-flight by Cate Blanchett’s bad-ass villain.

Palming the hammer in her one hand, she appears to use her powers to send a pulse of energy through Thor’s iconic weapon. As a result, there is a blast of energy that shoots through the alley and Mjolnir is blown to pieces. That begs the question, is this the last we see Thor’s hammer?

When something gets blown to pieces like Mjolnir did in this trailer, it is hard to envision it being put back together. The hammer was literally blown to pieces! So it is certainly a good bet that the God of Thunder will go through the majority of this film without his trusty tool.

But this is a comic book universe. Anything is possible in a world of superheroes and flying aliens. The dead come back to life (Just ask Phil Coulson). So while things may look bleak for Mjolnir right now, we must remember magic does exist within the MCU. While a hammer being blown to a bunch of tiny pieces may result in a lost hammer in most worlds, something tells me that won’t be the case here.

It is just too iconic and Thor simply is not Thor without it. The hero is a going to be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War come 2018 and then the fourth Avengers film in 2019. Can you really picture him taking on Thanos without his greatest weapon? I know I certainly cannot.
