The 2016 Major League Baseball season came to an end on Sunday. The 2016 MLB playoffs began on Tuesday night with the American League Wild Card game between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. The National League Wild Card happens on Wednesday night as the New York Mets will be hosting the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field. The winner of this NL Wild Card game between the Giants and the Mets will get the no. 1 seed Chicago Cubs that will begin on Friday.
The New York Mets did not figure to be playing in this game tomorrow night after they went through an injury-plague season. They saw many key players including a majority of their pitching staff was put on the shelve. Some of them included Matt Harvey, Zach Wheeler, Jacob DeGrom and others from the rotation. In the aspect of the hitters, the Mets saw Neil Walker and David Wright go down with season-ending injuries. Somehow, they were able to get help from a lot of no names like Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman. They were getting help from hitters like Jose Reyes, TJ Rivera, and Jay Bruce. After the Mets had played the Giants in the middle of August, they started turning their season around and would go on to win ten of the final twelve series. The Mets decided to go with Noah Syndergaard to start the Wild Card game as he has been off for seven days.
He went 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA in his 30 games that he started. It should also be noted that he has never pitched in a Wild Card game, unlike his counter partner. What will be interesting to see is how much of a leash do the Mets give Noah knowing that all hands need to be on deck. On the other side, you have a San Francisco Giants team that stumbled into the playoffs as they only won four of the final twelve series. The San Francisco Giants are going with Madison Bumgarner who seems always to be the key piece to when the Giants make their runs. He has pitched in the Wild Card game before and had a record of 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.
It should be noted that Madison Bumgarner has a scary good record pitching at Citi Field over the last few years. Between 2013-2015, he had a 2-0 record with a 0.56 ERA and pitched 16 innings. In his one appearance at Citi Field in 2016, he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and pitched six innings. It should be interesting to note that one of the biggest reasons why the Giants stumbled into the playoffs was due to their bullpen. Depending on how the game goes on Wednesday night, it will depend if we see other starting pitchers that are coming into relief help.
