“I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted.”
– Alan Turing
In the not so distant future, humans will be removed from the dangers of policing society’s criminal element. The streets will be patrolled by uncompromising and incorruptible robotic police sentries.
One of the creators of this new technology, Dr. Deon Wilson, believes that these robots have even greater potential than what they are being tasked with. Wilson absconds with a decommissioned police robot with the intent of using it to further his research in the field of artificial intelligence. The result of his experimentation is Chappie, a thinking and feeling robot with a childlike fascination for the “life” he has been given.
When Dr. Wilson’s former colleagues, Vincent Moore and Michelle Bradley, learn of his work, they seek to put an end to it. Their fears about the unpredictability of a robot as a truly sentient being will fuel their relentless efforts to kill Chappie.
Chappie was directed by Neill Blomkamp based on a script he wrote with Terri Tatchell. Sharlto Copley breathes life into the childlike robot named Chappie and is joined by a cast that includes: Dev Patel, Watkin Tudor Jones, Yolandi Visser, Sigourney Weaver, Hugh Jackman, and Jose Pablo Cantillo.
Is Chappie a threat to the very fabric of humanity or just the next logical step in the evolution of technology? It’s a question that will hopefully be answered when Chappie is released in theaters on Friday March 6th.
