Despite filling in for Jimmy Garoppolo in the New England Patriots 27-0 win over the visiting Houston Texans Thursday night, it came at a price for third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett. A 6’4″, 235 lb rookie out of NC State, reportedly tore a thumb ligament in his right thumb during the second half per WEEI’s Mike Petraglia, and will require surgery.

In leading to the Pats to a 3-0 record sans Brady, Brissett went 11-of-19 for 103 yards passing, and eight rushes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Already down to their third QB in two weeks thanks to Tom Brady serving a four-game suspension and the aforementioned Garoppolo out with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, the Patriots may be forced to turn to former quarterback-turned-receiver in Julian Edelman.

Edelman, a 2009 seventh-round pick and former standout QB at MAC school Kent State, was reportedly given some snaps and worked with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels due to the short turnaround and lack of preparedness of Brissett. He was also listed as the backup during Thursday’s Week 3 game.

In three years as starting the quarter, the 5’10 Edelman threw for 4,997 yards, 30 touchdowns while rushing for 2,483 yards and 22 touchdowns on 502 carries. Apparently, if McDaniels can come up with a quality gameplan for a rookie such as Brissett, surely, he can find one over the next ten days for an equally capable dual-threat player such as Edelman.

And if the Patriots’ resounding shutout win over the Texans, is any further proof of the genius of Bill Belichick, imagine what he can do for an encore with Edelman.
