The Premier League season is in full swing this September 2024, with the action hotting up with key fixtures and club strategies being played out. We will have a quick look on how the nine clubs – Manchester City, Chelsea, Southampton, Liverpool, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur – are doing so far, as we unravel how their season is shaping up. Here are some highlights.

1. Manchester City: Navigating Injuries in the Title Defense

Manchester City remains a serious contender this season to win the Premier League. But the absence of Rodri from the midfield for a longer period of time has become a cause for concern. The Spanish international’s absence has exposed City’s need for a  replacement for Rodri. Options are being tested in the shape of Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis. City’s incredible unbeaten run so far this season with Rodri being a great midfielder is testament to the fact that he is irreplaceable.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 10 (as of 2024)

•          Man City Standings (1st place)

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 12 (after 4 games)

•          Key Player: Erling Haaland (Top scorer)

Nevertheless, for all the pressure not to let history repeat itself, City have carried on doing what they do best. They still play precisely and they still press like you wouldn’t believe. September brings big games against Newcastle and Arsenal: if City are to win another crown, they will need to rediscover all four of those qualities.

2. Chelsea: New Era Under Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea has gone through some changes, this season, with a new manager in Mauricio Pochettino, who is rebuilding the team after a very difficult 2023. The team has lost some of their matches. On the 12th of August, Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0 with Nicolas Jackson scoring twice, and Cole Palmer scoring his first goal in the Premier League.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 6

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 7

•          Key Player: Enzo Fernández

Chelsea’s post-transitional phase thus continues, a period of instability and re-establishment of an identity that’s now one based on youth and world-record signings. Fernández and Palmer are a work in progress, but if they continue to take advantage of their opportunities, the future does look rosy.

3. Southampton: Finding Their Footing Post-Relegation

Southampton tries to adapt itself in the Championship after being relegated in 2023. The Saints started the season under a new manager,  Ralph Hasenhüttl, and it was not going smoothly. The team has never been consistent with their performances so far, especially because they lack the options to replace injured forwards. It seems like Southampton need to up their game in the next few months, if they are to make it back to the Premier League.

Key Stats:

•          2024 Championship Standing:  19th place

•          Key Player: James Ward-Prowse (transferred to West Ham in 2023)

4. Liverpool: Title Contenders Once Again?

Liverpool is back to its winning ways after last week’s early-season blip. Jürgen Klopp’s team put on a masterclass against Bournemouth in their 3-0 victory this week. The goals were scored by Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 19

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 9

•          Key Player: Mohamed Salah

Klopp manages squad rotation well, and with new firepower such as the summer bargains Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo alongside the existing talent, Liverpool’s attacking options are plentiful. The task remains to maintain momentum.

5. West Ham: Struggling to Find Form

West Ham have made a poor start to 2024, taking just four points from their first five matches of the season. A 0-3 defeat to Chelsea on the 21st of September underlines the problem, as injuries play a major part in Moyes’s woes. Long-term absentee Niclas Füllkrug has been a big miss.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 0

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 4

•          Key Player: Lucas Paquetá

If West Ham are going to escape relegation, they’ll need to find some momentum soon.

6. Crystal Palace: Trying to hold on

Crystal Palace is struggling to hold on and it looks like they will need to get back on track. Currently they are at the 16th place with only 2 points this competition. Their last game ended up in a draw against Leicester.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 0

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 2

•          Key Player: Eberechi Eze

Palace will hope that draws can morph into victories as the season goes on, especially as Eze continues to shine in midfield.

7. Wolves: Battling Tough Fixtures

Wolves have had a rocky start with more tough fixtures against the top teams of the league fast approaching, as well as making it hard for themselves to score and their defence looking shaky at times.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 0

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 1

•          Key Player: Pedro Neto

Wolves will have to go deep in the coming weeks to avoid a scrap for survival.

8. Fulham: Staying Competitive

So far, Fulham have had a decent campaign in a tough league, holding together with results that indicate they deserved to stay in the Premier League after last season’s resurgence.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 0

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 5

•          Key Player: Aleksandar Mitrovic (transferred in 2023)

Fulham’s focus remains on consolidating their Premier League status and avoiding a relegation battle.

9. Tottenham Hotspur: Consistency Still a Challenge

Tottenham’s start to the season has been something of a rollercoaster ride, with occasional sparkles undermined by inconsistency. With Harry Kane gone, and no natural replacement up front, Spurs are still working out how to cope.

Key Stats:

•          Premier League Titles: 2

•          2024-2025 Season Points: 4

•          Key Player: Son Heung-min

Whether Tottenham will be able to hang on to hopes of playing European football will depend on the speed at which they learn to live without him.

Conclusion

The Premier League season of September 2024 is already shaping up to be a thriller. Manchester City, despite a raft of injuries, remain in ominous form. Liverpool are mounting a genuine title challenge. And Chelsea are slowly rebuilding after a difficult summer. Meanwhile, West Ham and Wolves are both having tough starts to the season that might dictate the rest of their campaigns. As the season unfolds, the Premier League will only get more and more competitive. The 2024-25 season should be a definite watch.
