The students and those preparing for the exam events were charged with inspiration when they attended a seminar at the esteemed campus of the Vajirao & Reddy IAS Institute which was kindly organized by the founder, Dr. S. In his remark, Dr. Chaudhary started off by explaining how he was able to crack the toughest competitive exams in India which is the CSE held by Union Public Service Commission or UPSC that is in simple language, very tough exam. He mentioned it that this exam will not be easy but at the same time intelligent preparation is also needed in order to pass this test.

“It is not only hard work in passing UPSC but is also consistency and smart work. The first thing aspirants need is the right mindset. You have to have faith that you can clear the exam on your first time and work for that purpose,” he said.

Knowing the pattern of the UPSC Exam

Dr. Chaudhary discussed how the most basic, yet critical thing, of strategic preparation lies in the knowledge of the stage-wise division of the UPSC CSE into Three Stages: The first stage being the Preliminary Exam (Prelims), Second Stage being Mains Exam, Third Stage being the Personality Test or Interview stage.

“The Prelims is all about screening, but it has a greater importance than many tend to ascribe it owing to the fact it is competitive. It is a test of both knowledge and speed. The Mains on the other hand tests more of your broad comprehension, analytical and expression. Each step entails the use of different approaches,” he said. Dr. Chaudhary emphasized that from the start, students need to maintain their preparation for both the Prelims and the Mains at the same level so as to cover both the factual as well as the analytical parts of the syllabus.

·        Targeted Study Schedule

Dr. Chaudhary was of the opinion that specific aims with a study plan are as important. He suggested the candidates divide the syllabus into small sections and make a plan for the coverage of specific topics on daily, weekly, and monthly bases. He noted: “There may be a large syllabus, but it need not be overwhelming. It’s all about how you tackle this. Allocate time for each paper based on how strong or weak you are on each paper.”

Many times, aspirants are spoiled with too many study materials whilst out on their quest to study more. In such cases, Dr. Chaudhary advised using standard books for each subject so that students do not get carried away studying too many resources. “The NCERTs are the core subjects in the process of preparing for UPSC. In addition, students are encouraged to utilize some of the excellent reference books, and the class notes of Vajirao & Reddy’s in order to be on course.” This is due to the limited availability of time as the examination approaches. Otherwise, a student must study up to 14 times and make 14 pages of notes for the sake of 3 points.

Use of current affairs combined with facts will also be beneficial,” he stated.

Dr Chaudhary’s unique technique includes an important clause of regular practice and revision. He activated students to practice previous years’ question papers and to take up mock tests routinely. “Mock tests help in assessing weak areas before the actual exam and boosts confidence to take the exam. Revising notes and solving test papers on a daily basis, are important for the retention of information, as well as strategizing for the exam,” he articulated.

·        Improving Answering Methods

Dr. Chaudhary placed emphasis on the answering writing practice but particularly during the Mains stage. “In Mains, more than the knowledge, how you depict the knowledge is a factor. Your answers should be brief. Every day set out time to answer questions in a controlled environment. Learn to present arguments beginning with an introduction, the body and end with a conclusion,’’ he stated.

·        Time Management

Dr. Chaudhary emphasized that time management is a core factor to consider when sitting for the UPSC exam. He was quick to stress the importance of time management throughout preparation but most important while doing the exam. “The exam evaluates not only your knowledge however the way you manage your time is crucial. You should sometimes imitate deadlines in your daily work and learn to use time efficiently,” he appealed.

For his last words, Dr. Chaudhary turned his attention to the motivational angle of preparation, which is often overlooked by many aspirants. “In a way, you could say that preparing for the IAS is more long-distance running than it is a sprint. There will be trying times when doubt and fatigue will set in, but there is a need to boost enthusiasm and self-belief. Sit and compose around uplifting energy and never ever measure your growth against anyone. Each one has their life their way” He said and summarily concluded.
