Buying a mattress is an investment that everyone has to make at some point. Whether you’re ready to get rid of your childhood mattress, or you’re buying one for the sixth time, it’s hard to know what you’re looking out for. How do you know when it’s finally time to bite the bullet and buy a new one?
1. Your Mattress is Old
This one might seem obvious, but do you know the shelf life of a mattress? If you’re thinking about whether you need a new one or not, you’re going to need to know long you have been sleeping on your current mattress. 8 years is the recommended replacement age, so anything older than that is begging you for an upgrade.
2. You Can’t Sleep
Do you feel rested after waking? If you don’t feel that you’re getting quality sleep, or you’re waking up feeling like you haven’t slept at all, it’s time. For the sake of your health, sleep is not an area that you want to neglect.
3. You Wake up in Pain
After you finally climb out of bed, does your body hurt? Waking up with aches and pains after you haven’t even gotten proper rest is not a good situation, but it may be an easy enough fix. A new mattress can address morning aches.
4. Your Bed Sags
If you lie down and feel like you’re sagging into your mattress, that’s a red flag. It may be even more noticeable if you can see the sagging when you’re not lying in bed. A mattress that is not able to maintain its shape anymore has outlived its shelf life.
5. Your Lifestyle Changed
People change throughout their lives, that’s just the way it works. If you’ve made some significant changes, such as weight loss, your mattress many need an update. This might also be the case if you’ve had a significant medical procedure. Just as life changes, the support you need from a mattress is subject to change.
Bonus:
Since we’re already talking about changes, have you noticed a change in allergies? When allergies appear or increase in severity that is a huge sign that your mattress needs to be changed. Since mattresses are too big for the washer they can hold on to dust and allergens.
If you have found yourself nodding along to this list, you’re probably going to need to consider making a mattress upgrade.
