It’s quite understandable that we want the place that we spend the majority of our daily lives to be an understanding and enjoyable environment. Is that too much to ask? Our workplace should be somewhere where we feel respected and comfortable in. As an employer, it is your job to help foster the workplace environment, and it is your responsibility to get things back on track if you feel like they’ve gone off course.
Here are some tips to follow to ensure that you’re doing your best to promote a healthy work environment.
- Vocalize your appreciation.
Let your employees know that you appreciate the time and effort that they are putting into their jobs. Positive language can have an amazing effect on people. A positive attitude and making a habit of recognizing your employees will have a tremendous effect on the environment in general.
- Take breaks!
Implement an extra short break or two during the day. Better yet, create something that you can all do outside of the office together. Taking a short walk for example; your employees get some fresh air, a change of pace, and in return you could even learn more about their personal lives.
- Incentives, Incentives, Incentives!
Incentives is a tale as old as time. We all know that people love to work for and win things. While this is a great idea to increase productivity, keep in mind that you want this to motivate people, not create competition and isolation. Think of incentives like: buying lunch, happy hour, or weekend trips.
- Whatever you do, DON’T micromanage.
No one wants someone constantly looking over their shoulder. Feeling like your boss is always second guessing or double checking your work can create a feeling of annoyance or resentment. Allowing them to have their space, work independently, and trusting them to get the job done will foster a more positive work environment and a better relationship with your employees.
- BE HAPPY.
Everybody wants to wake up in the morning excited to go to work. Having that comfortable atmosphere where everyone is friendly and positive makes working 9-5 bearable. Creating a relationship with your employees is work in itself, but it pays off so much, and you want to enjoy going to work too! Be happy; ask them how they are, get involved, be humorous, and kind.
Creating a great work environment starts with you. Not only should you try your best to foster this environment, you should always listen to and respect your employees.
