Washington, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to formally implement 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from key trade partners Canada and Mexico. The official declaration is expected on Monday, as confirmed by Trump during a press conference aboard Air Force One en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

Trump first introduced similar tariffs during his initial term in March 2018, citing national security concerns. Canada received a temporary exemption at the time but was later subjected to the tariffs on May 31, 2018, prompting retaliatory measures from the Canadian government. The two nations resolved the dispute in May 2019, yet the new tariffs threaten to reopen old wounds.

In a pre-Super Bowl interview on Fox News, Trump controversially suggested that Canada would benefit as the 51st state of the U.S., citing alleged financial losses of $200 billion annually—a figure disputed by official statistics. Canada’s 2023 trade surplus with the U.S. was $94.4 billion, primarily from oil exports.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently secured temporary 30-day reprieves from the impending tariffs after discussions with Trump, focusing on border security and economic strategies. Nevertheless, industry leaders express growing concern over potential inflation and supply chain disruptions.
