We frequently hear this question whether hosting dinner parties, travelling across state lines, or going to wine and culinary festivals.

We consider ourselves fortunate to live in this region of the world.  Its varied seasons result in constantly shifting textures and landscapes.  Vineyards go through stages of green lushness, gnarled, exposed, and naked, followed by autumnal colour.  Enjoying a variety of foods and seasonal vegetables is one of the pleasures that come with the ebb and flow of mild, rainy winters to hot, dry summers.  Every season brings with it a fresh start, a challenge, and a transformation.

There is usually a favourite child, though.  In our opinion, the ideal time to travel to South Australia is also the ideal time to explore the Barossa.  Fall.

Here are three explanations.

1) Antique

Although the initial fruit harvests usually occur in the latter part of the summer, vintage really picks up speed starting in March.  Teams of grape pickers are scattered over the area as the sun rises on the clear, serene early autumn mornings, filling their buckets with the harvest of the year.  There is a distinct aroma of vintage grapes and wine, as well as the anxious strain of winemakers who are aware of the job that lies ahead.

The charm of vintage in the Barossa is that guests who happen to drop by a tiny cellar door are probably going to witness some vintage work being done out back.  You may even have the opportunity to meet the winemaker and sample a young wine during its initial fermentation.

2) The Vintage Festival of Barossa

The Barossa hosts the Vintage Festival every two years, which attracts more than 70,000 tourists to the area.  The Barossa Vintage Festival, which dates back to 1947, will stage a number of activities from April 23 to April 27 in 2025.  This is Barossa at its best: a celebration of great wine, epicurean delights, music, the arts, and historical and cultural events.

3) The Event Calendar for South Australia

During “Mad March,” when the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe are in full swing along with a number of other events, South Australia’s reputation as the Festival State is never more apparent.  A visit to Barossa can easily be added to any of the numerous events taking place in and around Adelaide because there is so much going on.  From the CBD, it’s a simple one-hour trip north, and you could go from enjoying a Shiraz to seeing a theatrical production all in one day.

Adelaide Fringe: The largest arts festival in the nation, the Adelaide Fringe, is revolutionising Adelaide and the rest of South Australia.

Adelaide Festival: The Adelaide Festival is an extravaganza of visual arts, dance, theatre, and opera that mostly takes place in the city centre and parklands.

WOMADelaide: In the centre of Adelaide’s breathtaking Botanic Park, WOMADelaide is an outdoor festival honouring cultural exploration.

Gather Around: All of the AFL season’s games will take place in Adelaide and the surrounding areas as South Australia experiences a football festival.

Tasting Australia: For the foodie-focused, epicurean-minded events that take place in Adelaide and other places.
