Captain Marvel Peggy Carter MCU

This past weekend at Comic-Con International, movie fans were treated to a plethora of new information. In particular, fans of Marvel and the MCU were given plenty of goodies to dwell on. While Avengers: Infinity War and Thor: Ragnarok get most of the attention, let’s not forget about Captain Marvel.

While the first Marvel film to be centered around a female hero is not set for release until March 8, 2019, and the title character, who will be played by Brie Larson, is not set to appear in Infinity War, we were still given an update. This included some concept art of Larson in the suit for the first time. The announcement that the Skrulls will be the film’s primary villain. And Nick Fury will play a role, with not one, but two eyes! This is because the film will be set in the 1990’s.

Fans immediately started to buzz when they learned Fury would be involved. A lot of the excitement likely stems from the fact that we will get some backstory on the character, who has been a bit of a mystery man through all of his appearances in the MCU. But now, we are very likely to see how exactly he lost that eye! But he is not the only character fans should be on the lookout for. The 90’s setting is the perfect chance for Marvel to bring back Hayley Atwell for another appearance as Peggy Carter!

The last we heard of Peggy, she sadly passed away from old age during Captain America: Civil War. Prior to that, we had seen Peggy during the year of 1989 during a flashback scene in Ant-Man. It could very well be that connection to Hank Pym and Ant-Man that lead to Peggy making a comeback.

Peggy was born in 1921. That means in 1989, she would have been 68. So we fast forward a few years into the 90’s, and that puts her in her 70’s. While she is not going to be a completely active member of S.H.I.E.L.D, she would still be in the picture.

We also know sometime in the 1980’s, Janet Van Dyne disappeared into the Quantum Realm. Given Michelle Pfeiffer was just cast as Janet, we can venture to guess she is in fact still alive in there, as most predicted. Outside of Pym, S.H.I.E.L.D was also interested in exploring the ins and outs of said Quantum Realm.

Now let’s fast forward a bit, shall we?

If Captain Marvel is going to take place in the 90’s, how is Larson supposed to look the same come 2019? Trapping her in the Quantum Realm certainly seems logical.

Carol Danvers, the true identity of the superheroine, is not going to show up in 2018’s Infinity War film. After that movie, there are two movies. First, we have Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6th, 2018 and then Captain Marvel in 2019. So wouldn’t it make sense to introduce fans to Captain Marvel in a post credit scene during Ant-Man and the Wasp, where Scott Lang comes across Danvers in the Quantum Realm? It certainly does to me.

That simply leads to the final question, how does she end up there?

Given the presence of Nick Fury, the likely answer is because S.H.I.E.L.D sends her there on some form of mission. Her solo film could easily end with her getting stuck there. They could even save the scene with Lang finding her there during present day for this film.

This leads us back to Peggy Carter. If Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D are heavily involved in the film, why not include Captain America’s former love interest? Fans love Atwell in the role. She is one of those characters that people always love to see pop up.

With her now deceased in present day, a movie set in the 90’s may be the last true chance to see her one last time. It is one of those cameos, or even regular roles, that many may not expect to see, given her current status. But when you do a period piece, bringing back the dead is always a fun idea.

So what do you think? Will the Captain Marvel film bring Peggy Carter back to the MCU? Or have we seen the last of Atwell in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
