The San Francisco 49ers acquired left tackle Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins for a 5th round pick this year and a 3rd round pick in 2021.
Rumors before the draft indicated that Joe Staley may retire resulting in the belief the 49ers were going to use the 13th pick to take an offensive tackle. Yet, John Lynch traded down fom that spot to no.14 and took defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. He then traded up to no.25 to take wide receiver Brandon Ayuik.
On Friday reports indicated the 49ers interest in Williams. By Saturday Lynch got the trade done.
Williams sat out the 2019 season and it’s epxected that he will restructure the final year of his contract and play for the 49ers in 2020. He has been to the Pro-Bowl seven times and is considered one of the best left tackles in the NFL.
The one concern for the 49ers with Williams is that he has missed time due to various injuries and last played a full season in 2013. He will also reunite with Kyle Shanahan who was the offensive coordinator for the Redskins in 2010 the year he got drafted.
Here’s a look at the reaction to the trade:
The #49ers still have a few late round picks left, but this year’s draft is essentially DT Javon Kinlaw, WR Brandon Aiyuk, and a trade for veteran OT Trent Williams. They’ve added three impact starters! #NFLDraft #49wz
