“There’s no tragedy in life like the death of a child. Things never get back to the way they were.” –Dwight D. Eisenhower
In Stalin era Soviet Russia, crime is a societal element that simply does not exist…or at least, that’s what the powers that be would have the Soviet people believe. The Soviets believe that crime is merely a sickness born out of the tenets of capitalism. When the murders of numerous young boys comes to light, it’s a societal blemish for which Soviet state officials absolutely will not stand. Demoted and disgraced in his position as a Soviet security officer, Leo Demidov learns that his best friend’s son has become the most recent in the long line of this serial murderer’s collection of victims. With the help of his wife and a Russian general, Demidov holds steadfast to his commitment to solve the case.
Child 44 was directed by Daniel Espinosa from Richard Price’s adaptation of the first novel in Tom Rob Smith’s Demidov Trilogy. Tom Hardy leads a talented cast that includes Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, Jason Clarke, and Vincent Cassel.
