Knowing what it takes to be a competent business leader is just the beginning of what it means to actually be that competent leader. While some of the traits may come naturally, others can be learned. However, with that said, do you feel as though you have what it takes to be the type of leader that your team looks up to? Here are just five of the most important traits a competent business leader should have.
1. Effective Communication Skills
Communication is, perhaps, the most important trait you can have when it comes to being a great leader. Not only must you be able to communicate clearly, but you should be tactful as well. You’ve heard the old adage, “It’s not what you say, but how you say it.” This is what it means to have effective communication skills. It’s having the ability to get your point across clearly without being unnecessarily abrupt. These kinds of skills can be mastered in a Communication Certificate program and one that you just might want to study if you want to be a leader that truly leads their team to be the best that they can be.
2. Empathetic Leadership
Having empathy is a trait any good leader should have. This was something lacking in many leaders during the recent global pandemic. Unfortunately, the stress of the situation brought out the worst in some of our corporate leaders while highlighting the best in others. Being able to empathize with what an employee is going through doesn’t mean giving unnecessary leeway, but it can lead to outcomes in which everyone has their needs met from the board of directors right on down to the employee in question. An empathetic leader leads with compassion.
3. Willingness to Lead by Example
As a true leader, you should never approach a situation from the “Do as I say” position, simply because you are the leader. Rather, you will gain much greater levels of respect if you are willing to demonstrate by example. A true leader should always be willing to get down in the trenches with the lowest-paid hourly laborer if they want the respect of their crew.
4. Give Credit Where Credit Is Due
It is also important to give credit where credit is due. If you have a member of the team, or in fact the entire team, that should be singled out for a particular achievement, don’t be afraid to give them the recognition they deserve. Your positive feedback will go a whole lot farther than any reprimand ever could. By showing appreciation for their accomplishments, you will motivate them to do better in everything they do.
5. Objectivity
One of the most important skills you can have as a leader is the ability to observe any situation objectively. You should be willing to see all sides of an ‘argument’ if you are to decide on a direction to take going forward. Altogether too often leaders decide in favor of certain team members because they are usually on point. This isn’t always going to be the case, so objectivity should be the deciding factor in every situation and at all times.
