Imagine walking into a restaurant in New York City, asking to see their menu and their host tells you: “We actually don’t have a menu.” You think to yourself this is crazy, how could this restaurant not have a food menu right? What they actually offer is a two dish pre-fixed meal; steak and fries that is all!
Taking after its mother restaurant in Port-Maillot, Paris, L’Entrecote has become a sensation to steak/frites lovers everywhere. As soon as you walk in it is hard not to fall in love with this charming restaurant. From the beautiful wall decors, to the colorful tables, and the lovely waitresses dressed as French maids it does all look magnifique.
Now that we have established everything is pleasant on the eyes, it is time to see if our taste buds agree. The waitress comes over and explains the concept: for starters a green salad with a mustard/vinaigrette dressing and walnuts on top followed by the entree of sliced Sirloin steak with french fries and their infamous “secret sauce.” Not only is this dish topped up with a secret sauce but also you get two servings of steak and fries. Mon dieu!
Apparently, there are only four ways this steak could be cooked: blue, rare, medium or well; Their medium is cooked to a perfect pink in the center while their rare tends to be more on the red side but still warm.
While you wait for your meal they do have a wine list of perfectly selected wines to accompany your steak.
The steak is brought out and placed at the server’s station. She then plates it on a hot plate herself and serves it to you. The steak is cooked to perfection and the sauce can only be described as a buttery heaven delight. It is a secret recipe but the servers will tell you it is a “buttered base sauce.” The sauce is what makes this dish and what keeps people coming back for more.
If after devouring this plate of heaven, you still have room, you should indulge in one of their must haves desserts. From a list of over a dozen sweet treats there is something for everyone.
If you are a meat lover you can’t go wrong with this place. Finally a place that doesn’t require you to think about what you want and have to spend so much time ciphering through a menu. We spend all day making decisions, it is nice to go somewhere and the only thing you need to decide on is how you like your meat cooked, sit back and enjoy your night out. The best part is where else are you going to get a two course steak and fries meal for under $30 in Manhattan?
Only here, at L’entrecote. They may be only doing one thing but they are definitely doing it right.
