falafel

The history of falafel goes back to Pharaonic Egypt. Today, it has made its way into the American menu and is popular as a quick, nutritious meal. In fact, in 2010, a New York-based chef fried the largest falafel in the world, weighing as much as 10.9 kg! Originally made from fava beans, chickpeas or both, falafel is packed with folate and protein, according to an article on From The Grapevine.

Here are some interesting ways to savor these little fried balls:

Falafel Burger

This is the most classic yet simplest way to savor falafel. You can add finely ground chickpeas, onions, parsley, garlic and spices and deep fry them into semi circles.  Use whatever ingredient is left at home, like slider buns or pita, to create a delicious batch for lunch or dinner. For a smoky flavor, you could add a pinch of paprika or black pepper, like the Middle Eastern locals do.

Falafel Sandwich

Most falafel restaurants serve them in pita, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, tahini sauce and onions. You can try adding chicken kebabs, olives and turnips, baba ghanoush, hummus and lemon juice for a scrumptious taste. Make sure to coat the sandwich well with sauces and stuff chicken or turkey for a meaty affair.

Falafel Salad

Serving falafel on a bed of fresh salad is the healthiest meal ever! Beets, lettuce, bell peppers, mayonnaise and onions, along with flavored yogurt, can make for a light and delicious meal. You can also pour some avocado sauce or cream on top for added flavor. Remember that as little as 100 grams of falafel can have 333 calories and when deep fried, they become high in fat as well, according to an article on Healthline.

Falafel Waffles

This is slightly healthier since no deep frying is involved. A waffle iron works here to fry the dough and reduce the fat content. They are just like any normal waffle – crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. You can serve them with whole grains and sprinkle some roasted vegetables, fresh pickles, chilies and even sprouts.

Falafel Pie

Pies are exceptionally filling, particularly when served with salad. To keep the Mediterranean vibe intact, add generous amounts of feta and fresh cucumber, hummus, onions, olives and tomatoes. Make sure the pie is doubly thick, so that it does not break while garnishing. Choose the toppings according to your preference but do add tahini sauce and yogurt for an authentic taste.

Falafel Pizza

This could be a fantastic and wholesome meal when done right. You will need to bake the pizza base well and then add chopped falafel. Further, add the right amount of sun-dried olives and tomatoes for a rustic flavor. Grate mozzarella or parmesan cheese on top and serve with lemon and pepper. To make it spicy and creamy, add harissa sauce in the end.

Until you can get back to your nearest falafel joint, satiate your cravings with these simple dishes. Once the pandemic is completely under control, don’t forget to visit your favorite falafel at restaurants once again.
