This past Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles hosted a public practice for their fans to see how this team will look during the upcoming 2022 season. New Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown completely stole the show. Brown was almost uncoverable as he caught a 30-yard touchdown catch from QB Jalen Hurts.
The concern that I saw during this training camp is that Hurts only threw the ball a handful of times. During the 11-on-11 drills, Hurts went to the read option and took off for ten to 25 yards per run to move the chains down the field.
My concern is, and always will be, is that pocket passers win playoff games, while mobile quarterbacks will win MVPs and highlight reels, but will not advance far in the postseason. In the National Football League, the defensive coordinators are so good that in the postseason they put a spy on the mobile quarterback and make him throw to beat the defense with his arm.
I am very disappointed that the Eagles will not entertain a quarterback competition. They are automatically handing the starting job to Hurts, so this will not put any pressure on him whatsoever.
I watched quarterback Gardener Minshew on two back-to-back drives that led the Eagles offense down the field with a back-up offensive line and back-up wide receivers to not one but two touchdowns. Minshew is not their best quarterback, but he is a capable backup who took over for Nick Foles, after he won Super Bowl LII and received a large contract from Jacksonville.
The Eagles also have another quarterback that goes by the name of Carson Strong from the University of Nevada. Strong was supposed to be a first-round talent but slipped out of the draft and was unselected. The Eagles picked up the undrafted free agent this off-season.
Strong has a very strong arm, but unfortunately, he’s not grasping the offense and is overwhelmed at times. My conclusion to this is that we no longer have any more quarterback competition anymore because they don’t want to hurt any players’ feelings.
