Sam Smith is sitting at the top of the music world. After winning big at the Grammy Awards last night, Smith has become one of the most recognizable names in American pop culture.

Smith, whose four Grammy Awards included Record of the Year and Best New Artist, wasn’t afraid to give credit to those that got him to this point in his career.

“This is the best night of my life Just a quick one: I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”

Indeed, it’s a very good thing Smith was left heartbroken. It’s because of this we got to experience some of the most heartfelt music ever recorded. You truly feel Smith’s passion every time his song is played.  It’s that same passion that took Smith from British sensation to American megastar.

Before hitting American soil, the 22-year-old Smith was already a star in the United Kingdom. He obtained his first number one single “La La La” when he was featured on a track with British Disc Jockey, Naughty Boy.

It was during May 2014 that Smith released his debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour. He featured two singles off the album, Lay Me Down and Money on My Mind, the latter of which became his second number one single in the United Kingdom. However, it was his third single, Stay With Me, that catapulted Smith’s career.

Stay With Me, which reached number one in the U.K., claimed the top spot in America, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Proving he was no one-hit wonder, Smith’s fourth single, I’m Not the Only One, reached as high as number five on both the U.K. and American charts.

If Smith is to continue his run as one of the world’s most iconic musicians he will need to continue his string of quality hits. The formula has worked wonders for fellow British superstar Adele, who jump started her career with a dominating Grammy performance.

Smith’s Grammy success is no doubt a sign of things to come. Smith has all the tools necessary to become a top star in American music. While four Grammy’s is quite the haul, there is no doubt Smith would like to add to that collection.
