Expat in Paris

There are many reasons to travel to the wonderfully cosmopolitan city of Paris and some travelers love it so much, that they decide to call Paris home. However, many people look at alternatives to living in Paris due to what they perceive as a very expensive city to live in. The reality is that Paris ranks in the 50th spot for the most expensive city in the world for expats which is way behind London in the 19th position or Sydney in 66th place.

One thing many cities in the world pale in comparison to Paris is the many attractions you can enjoy for free or spend very little. From special events to cafes and restaurants, Paris has something for everyone even those on a very tight budget. We’ve found some ways you can make your budget last longer as an expat in Paris so you can engage in little joie de vivre without breaking the bank.

Invest in Comfortable Shoes

One of the best things about living as an Expat in Paris is that many of the wonders in the city are within walking distance. As long as you have a comfortable pair of shoes, you can explore the city at your heart’s desire. While in the center you can visit a museum or two. What you’ll really love is that on the first Sunday of every month, all the museums in the city offer free admission. You can visit many other historic locations that are free all year round, such as Notre Dame Cathedral and Sacre Coeur. One thing you’ll quickly appreciate is that Paris itself is a wonderful museum with stunning architecture, gorgeous parks and miles of river banks that are free to explore. Best of all walking is free and is the best way to explore your new home city.

Dining in Style

French cuisine is among the most famous and most delicious in the world and Paris is proud to boast over 100 Michelin Star restaurants. While fine dining may be out of reach for those on a shoestring budget, you can still enjoy some mouthwatering food in the heart of Paris. Firstly, French bakeries are world-famous and the breads and pastries will have you drooling the moment you see them. What you’ll really love is that many bakeries offer lunchtime specials that include a generous half-baguette sandwich with a sweet pastry and a non-alcoholic beverage for less than you’d expect. Take your bakery lunch into one of Paris’ gorgeous parks and enjoy your meal al fresco. While you do need to pay for the meal, the scenery and park benches are free to enjoy. Many bistros, cafes and restaurants also offer lunchtime menus that often include a small soup or salad with a more substantial main menu meal for 10 Euros or less. If you’re still thirsty after your meal, there are many water fountains in Paris so you can quench your thirst without parting with hard earned cash.

Learn to Cook Like a Parisian

There is nothing better than a home-cooked meal unless it’s a delicious French meal you’ve cooked yourself. The French know a thing or two about enjoying a lovely meal and the main meal of the day can last for a couple of hours and consist of many different courses and components. You can shop around for ingredients in the supermarket but you’ll find some of the best grocery buys in open-air markets. To make the most of these markets, take a bit of time to plan menus for the week and then hit the markets to get everything you need to create fabulous meals.

A Place to Call Home

The cost of living is a little high in Paris and accommodation will most likely take the largest chunk out of your budget. Even in real estate, Paris has something for everyone and every budget. All you need to do is find a reputable website that allows you to select your preferences via filters and you can find your ideal home in your chosen neighborhood at a price you feel comfortable paying. Some of these places offer short- and long-term accommodation and even fully furnished apartments that are move-in ready.

Whether you can spend like a prince or a pauper, you can find your special place in the wonderful city that is Paris. This is a city that has welcomed thousands upon thousands of expats so with a little bit of exploration and some old-fashioned gumption, you’ll not only find your place in Paris, but you can also live and thrive like a true Parisian.
