HAPPY VALLEY, PA — As the Penn State Nittany Lions get set to face Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff Semifinal game in the Capital One Orange Bowl, one player who could be a major impact player in the NFL could be Penn State Nittany Lions tight end, Tyler Warren.

Warren, who has quickly emerged into arguably one of the top pass catchers in the country, thanks to winning the John Mackey Award, given to the top tight end in college football, could be the X-factor in the Lions’ CFP playoff run.

I don’t typically compare prospects to NFL Hall of Famers, but since four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski isn’t in the Hall yet, I’m making an exception because Warren is that rare, and that good.

The 6-foot-6, 257-pound Warren has the functional quickness and movement of a much-smaller player, more in line with 6-3 tight ends like Trey McBride or Sam LaPorta.

Warren has scored a touchdown this season as a passer, runner and receiver, and he entered the Fiesta Bowl with 92 receptions for 1,095 yards and six touchdowns.

For the year, Warren has caught 98 passes for 1,158 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 11.8 yards per catch.

Thanks to rare skill and size, Warren could be an Offensive Rookie of the Year-type of candidate in the right scheme.
