You now have a financed account after completing the prop company challenge. That is significant! However, there is one more thing you must do correctly before you start trading: properly configuring MetaTrader 5 (MT5). Making things work for you is more important than simply making it function. Because your trade is likely to be a mess if your setup is.
So let’s get into more depth about preparing MT5 for funded trading accounts.
So let’s discuss getting MT5 ready for funded trading accounts in detail.
Why MT5?
You have probably heard of both MT4 and MT5 if you have even a passing familiarity with trading. The majority of prop firms now use MT5, even if MT4 still has a devoted following. MT5 has a number of built-in features that make sense, especially for funded traders, and it is quicker, more powerful, and supports a wider range of asset classes.
Step 1: Download MT5 (From the Right Place)
This might seem obvious but you’d be surprised how many people download MT5 from sketchy third-party sites. Always get it from your prop firm’s official link or directly from MetaQuotes. If your prop firm uses a white-labeled version of MT5 download then they’ll usually provide you with a direct download link.
- Tip: If the prop firm offers a preconfigured version, just use that. It saves you time and hassle.
- Bonus Tip: Save the installer somewhere handy—you may need it again if you ever switch devices.
Step 2: Install It Properly
Just make sure:
- You choose a clear folder name if you’re installing multiple versions (say, one for demo, one for live).
- If you’re trading multiple funded accounts, installing separate instances for each account might be worth considering. It keeps things organized and helps avoid accidental trades on the wrong account.
Step 3: Log In to Your Funded Account
You’ll need:
- Login ID
- Password
- Server Name (this part is crucial—don’t guess it)
Your prop firm should’ve sent these details via email or inside your dashboard. If not, reach out to support. Don’t try to wing it; the server name has to be exact or MT5 will just throw an error at you.
In MT5:
- Go to File > Login to Trade Account.
- Enter your login, password, and the server name.
- Click OK and if all goes well, you’ll hear that satisfying “ding” as the terminal connects.
If you see invalid account or no connection then double-check your credentials, especially the server name. It’s usually something like “PropFirm-Live” or “Eightcap-Demo.”
Step 4: Set Up Your Market Watch
The Market Watch window is basically your trading dashboard. It shows all the symbols (currency pairs, indices, commodities, etc.) that your prop firm allows you to trade.
Here’s how to tailor it:
- Right-click inside the Market Watch and select “Symbols”.
- Expand the folders (e.g., Forex, CFDs, Futures).
- Enable only the instruments you trade regularly.
- Hide everything else to declutter.
Pro Tip: If your firm has specific assets for your challenge or funded phase, pin those to the top. You want to see what matters—nothing more, nothing less.
Step 5: Configure Your Charts (Make Them Work for You)
Staring at a plain MT5 chart is like driving a race car with a blank dashboard. It works but not well.
Customize your chart:
- Right-click > Properties – Pick colors you’re comfortable with. Dark backgrounds with bright candles are easy on the eyes during long sessions.
- Add indicators – Think Moving Averages, RSI, MACD—whatever fits your style.
- Save a template – After setting it up, right-click the chart > “Template” > “Save Template.” That way, you don’t have to redo everything each time.
Step 6: Set Up One-Click Trading
Speed matters—especially in prop trading, where a few seconds can make a difference. MT5 has a one-click trading feature that lets you open and close trades with a single click.
- Click the small triangle on the top-left of any chart.
- Agree to the disclaimer.
- Now, you’ll see Buy and Sell buttons with lot sizes right on the chart.
Just be careful—this thing is fast. Make sure your lot size is set correctly before you click.
Step 7: Adjust Trade Settings
Before entering any trades, go to Tools > Options > Trade Tab and set your:
- Default lot size
- Stop loss and take profit preferences
- Slippage tolerance
This saves you from manually punching in numbers each time which is easy to mess up under pressure.
Step 8: Set Up Notifications (So You Don’t Miss a Thing)
Prop trading isn’t a 9-to-5. Opportunities pop up when you least expect them. MT5 lets you set up:
- Email alerts
- Push notifications to your phone
- Custom alerts for price levels, news, and indicators
Head over to Tools > Options > Notifications to get started. You’ll need the MetaTrader 5 mobile app and your MetaQuotes ID to connect.
Step 9: Load Any Required EAs or Indicators
If your prop firm allows (or encourages) Expert Advisors (EAs), now’s the time to load them in.
- Open MT5.
- Go to File > Open Data Folder.
- Navigate to MQL5 > Experts (for EAs) or Indicators.
- Drop in your .ex5 or .mq5 files.
- Restart MT5, and they should show up in the Navigator panel.
Important: Always make sure the EA is approved for prop use. Many firms have strict rules about automated trading and breaking them can cost you your account.
