We are still very early in the off season for baseball and already there is drama. It is being reported that New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia was arrested on domestic violence charges. The first ones to report it was the Bergen Record who cited that the complaint was filed by authorities in Fort Lee municipal court.

The incident itself took place in the early hours of Monday morning in Fort Lee, New Jersey. This is still a developing story as there are still a lot of details that are still coming out. Here is a copy of the complaint that was filed on Monday morning

What makes this story even more ironic is that Familia was featured in an ad along with New York Yankees manager Joe Giradi on being against domestic violence. Here is the video:

Obviously, there will probably be more to come out about this over the next few days and weeks and it will be interesting to see what if any punishment that Rob Manfred will put on Familia. It should be noted that Jose Reyes, teammates with Familia was suspended for a chunk of last season after he was arrested on domestic violence charges and under MLB’s new rules in response to this problem.

The New York Mets already said they are monitoring the situation. I am hopeful that Familia does not get off easy for this.

Unfortunately, we are seeing this in sports far too much and I feel the only reason why its continuing is that none of the leagues are brushing it under the rug. During the 2014 NFL season, it seemed like this was going on once or twice a week. Unless the NFL, MLB,NBA, or NHL actually punish these people the right way, it will continue to poison sports.

By allowing this to go on, it is basically showing that because someone is an athlete and are above the law.
