Song lyrics speak to your soul and reflect who you are. It also allows an outlet for the listener’s emotions instead of being kept locked inside. Often times the song will get played with the the volume up. It’s a release and in my opinion one of the best bands to do it is Linkin Park.
With that being said here’s a look at the best songs lyrically from Linkin Park.
*One More Light
“And you’re angry, and you should be, it’s not fair
Just ’cause you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it, isn’t there If they say
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In a sky of a million stars
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone’s time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We’re quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well I do”
The song serves as a reminder for those who are feeling down that even when you’re feeling down and are in a dark place there’s someone out there who cares.
*Crawling
“Discomfort, endlessly has pulled itself upon me
Distracting, reacting
Against my will I stand beside my own reflection
It’s haunting
How I can’t seem To find myself again
My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence, I’m convinced)
(That there’s just too much pressure to take)
I’ve felt this way before
So insecure Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
Fear is how I fall
Confusing what is real”
For me this is about the pressures of life regardless of age and how we tend to lose ourselves from the stress.
*The Little Things Give You Away
“Hope decays
Generations disappear
Washed away
As a nation
Simply stares Don’t want to reach for me, do you?
I mean nothing to you
The little things give you away
But now there will be no mistaking
The levees are breakingAll you’ve ever wanted
Was someone to truly look up to you
And six feet under water, I do”
Linkin Park became political on their album Minutes To Midnight and this one is about the lack of response from when hurricane Katrina ripped through several states and the lack of leadership from the president at the time.
*My December
“And I (just wish that I didn’t feel like there was something I missed)
And I (take back all the things I said to make you feel like that)
And I (just wish that I didn’t feel like there was something I missed)
And I (take back all the things that I said to you)And I’d give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to”
What is there to say about loneliness? What someone wouldn’t give to have some human interaction. Now even more powerful lyrics with the pandemic going on.
*One Step Closer
“I find the answers aren’t so clear
Wish I could find a way to disappear
All these thoughts they make no sense
I find bliss in ignorance
Nothing seems to go away
Over and over again
Just like before Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I’m about to break
I need a little room to breathe
‘Cause I’m one step closer to the edge
And I’m about to break”
Seems to explain how there are certain individuals that can push you over the edge.
*Somewhere I Belong
“Just stuck, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long
(Erase all the pain ’til it’s gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m close to something real
I wanna find something I’ve wanted all along
Somewhere I belong”
It’s about accepting who you are and finding yourself so you can feel like you belong.
*Battle Symphony
“They say that I don’t belong
Say that I should retreat
That I’m marching to the rhythm
Of a lonesome defeat
But the sound of your voice
Puts the pain in reverse
No surrender, no illusions
And for better or worse When they turn down the lights
I hear my battle symphony”
What is there to say about perseverance? When things look bleak keep pushing on.
*The Messenger
“When you suffered it all
And your spirit is breaking
You’re growing desperate from the fight
Remember your love
And you always will be
This melody will always bring
You right back home When life leaves us blind
Love, keeps us kind
When life leaves us blind
Love keeps us kind”
A song that shows off Chester Bennington’s amazing voice. It’s a message to remember that love is powerful.
*Powerless
“You hid your skeletons when I had shown you mine
You woke the devil that I thought you’d left behind
I saw the evidence, the crimson soaking through
Ten thousand promises, ten thousand ways to lose And you held it all
But you were careless to let it fall
You held it all
And I was by your side, powerless”
A song from Linkin Park showing that you need to let people in. You can’t do it all on your own because you will become powerless and so will the ones who want to help you.
*In The End
“I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should knowI tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter”
Can make an effort with someone yet if they are unwilling to change it ends up not mattering since you can only go so far.
*Leave Out All The Rest
“Don’t be afraid
I’ve taken my beating
I’ve shared what I’ve made
I’m strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I’ve never been perfect
But neither have you
So, if you’re asking me, I want you to know When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I’ve done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
And don’t resent me
And when you’re feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest”
I’ve always enjoyed this song. We all want to know that we mattered and that we left a mark on this world. Regardless of how big or small. Which makes the suicide of Bennington that much worse. He made an indescribable impact on his fans.
*Numb
“And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me with someone disappointed in you I’ve become so numb
I can’t feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware I’m becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you”
To get through life you end up emulating those around you. Then the realization hits you want to evolve and become your own person with your own beliefs.
*Breaking The Habit
“Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than anytime before
I had no options left again I don’t want to be the one
The battles always choose
‘Cause inside, I realize
That I’m the one confused I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don’t know why I instigate
And say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I’ll never be alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit tonight I’ll paint it on the walls
‘Cause I’m the one at fault
I’ll never fight again
And this is how it ends”
These lyrics from Linkin Park are among their best. We tend to get stuck in the same old routine regardless of age, yet want to change. Want to do something different and to change it starts with you by making the first move.
*Easier To Run
“Sometimes I remember the darkness of my past
Bringing back these memories I wish I didn’t have
Sometimes I think of letting go and never looking back
And never moving forward so there’d never be a past If I could change I would take back the pain I would
Retrace every wrong move that I made I would
If I could stand up and take the blame I would
If I could take all the shame to the grave I would
If I could change I would take back the pain I would
Retrace every wrong move that I made I would
If I could stand up and take the blame I would
I would take all the shame to the graveJust washing it aside
All of the helplessness inside
Pretending I don’t feel misplaced
Is so much simpler than change It’s easier to run
Replacing this pain with something numb
It’s so much easier to go
Than face all this pain here all alone”
Linkin Park perfectly illustrating what pain is.
There is no particular order for this list. Linkin Park gave us great lyrics and meanings to their songs.
