Every year, something new is introduced that becomes popular through home decorating shows and online magazines. Most times, they are trends that have been done before, just now introduced with a new twist.
Here are some of the latest decorating trends according to well-known home designers:
Libraries – Despite the fact that fewer and fewer people ready paper bound books (as opposed to listening to podcasts or watching videos), home libraries are making a comeback in family rooms and living rooms. They can hold much more than books and often surround a television and support topiaries, ceramic figurines, vases and other home decorating items. Today’s libraries aren’t the dark stained variations indicative of old English castles; they can be painted in a bright color to compliment other colors in the home.
Bold Patterns – We are seeing bold patterns both on floors and walls with colorful tiles showing up in unusual places. Tiles are coming in a wider variety of patterns, with many floral designs to choose from.
Texture – More of your decorating surfaces – from the wall to the ceiling – are featuring textures to add new dimension and contrast to the overall decorating scheme.
Natural Wood – Unstained and blonde wood accents are making a return to the decorating scene, allowing the bolder elements in the room to take the stage.
Geometrics – Bold pattered geometric rugs and fabrics are making a comeback. They work best in solid-colored rooms where they can be the stars and avoid fighting other decorating features.
Natural Lighting – Fewer rooms feature curtains as designs turn towards letting in more natural light. Windows become bigger and more important in the overall room design.
Greens – In an effort to bring more of nature indoors, many shades of greens are finding their way into all rooms of the home, used to balance out bold, jeweled colors in fabrics.
Traditional Design – Following years of industrial decorating design, traditional furniture and décor is making a return with antique pieces.
3D Walls – Homeowners are now adding dimension to walls with 3d designs.
Sustainability – This trend is not limited to home decorating; it’s popular across many industries from fashion to food. Decorative items that are made with the preservation of the ecosystem in mind are popular choices among today’s Earth-conscious buyers.
Retro – 1970s décor is becoming more popular – peg-leg chairs and tables, turquoise, mustard and orange textured fabrics.
Homework Areas – More kids attending school at home led parents to rethink their learning spaces, creating areas for their kids to sit comfortably at a computer.
Natural Materials – Marble, granite, wood, and other natural decorating materials are increasing in popularity, complimenting the more traditional designs that are also returning to the scene.
This season’s trends have a little something for everyone, offering bold and exciting patterns for modern decoration while renewing interest in traditional favorites that our parents and grandparents still hold dear in their own homes. Perhaps it’s time we consider restoring those pieces instead of throwing them out. Everything old can be new again.
