Washington Redskins Doug Williams
Doug Williams - Senior VP of Player Personnel, Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins have had many front office issues since Daniel Snyder bought the team back in 1999. One of the biggest has been front office structure. They went many years without a general manager or personnel person. They then hired Scot McCloughan. He had a solid 2-year run. Then the organization and McCloughan had a falling out in March. They went through free agency and the draft without a personnel person through that process again. On Tuesday that all changed, again, when the Redskins promoted Doug Williams to the position of Senior Vice President of Player Personnel.

I wrote about the happening back in March. Doug Williams is more than capable of evaluating talent. In fact, he has previous GM experience as well. In 2010-2011, he was the General Manager of the Virginia Destroyers of the now-defunct United Football League. He has also held titles of Coordinator of Pro Scouting 2009-2010(Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and College Scout from 1995-1996(Jacksonville Jaguars).

Williams is now in the top three of the organization. He now sits behind Daniel Snyder and Bruce Allen on the org chart. He will have final say, along with Head Coach Jay Gruden, when it comes to the roster.

This is Doug Williams’s opportunity to shine. He can now put another mark on the franchise that he led to a 42-10 victory in Super Bowl XXII. He can show his leadership skills, eye for talent, and possible negotiation skills all while trying to make the franchise a consistent winner.

The first task ahead of Doug Williams will be to get QB Kirk Cousins signed to that long-term deal. If he is able to get this completed in the next month it will be a huge step in the success of this franchise. Williams can play a huge role in getting this done.

The hiring of Doug Williams shows the Washington Redskins are moving in the right direction. It shows stability within a once disheveled front office. Once a Redskin, always a Redskin. Williams is the right man for the job. Now let’s go to work.
