Rey Mysterio

As odd and unlikely a combination of Braun Strowman and Rey Mysterio may be, the idea of putting the two together as a tag team to face Sheamus and Cesaro at WrestleMania 34 is a hot topic amongst the wrestling masses and WWE fans.

According to several media outlets, including Sports Illustrated, the idea of signing Mysterio to a short-term deal to bring back the popular Mexican wrestler for this event is very real and something WWE owner Vince McMahon may pull off.

As Justin Barrasso wrote, “Rey Mysterio did not wrestle at this past Sunday’s New Japan show due to his bicep injury. If Mysterio is healthy, he is expected to work WrestleMania.”

Mysterio was on hand for the WWE Royal Rumble match in Philadelphia and looked better than he has looked in years.

“Permitting Mysterio can work, two sources close to WWE confirmed that Vince McMahon is strongly considering using Mysterio as Braun Strowman’s tag team partner against Cesaro and Sheamus,” Barrasso added.

“The idea of the biggest and smallest working together is right in McMahon’s wheelhouse. If Mysterio only works a short-term deal, the partnership also works as he can take the pinfall instead of Strowman.”

The 43-year-old Mysterio’s resume is quite impressive. He has won WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship, the WWE Championship, WCW/WWE Cruiserweight Championship, WCW World Tag Team Championship, WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship, WWC World Junior Heavyweight Championship, WWE Tag Team Championship, and WWE Intercontinental Championship. He is also the twenty-first WWE Triple Crown Champion and the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble match.

Mysterio has had success in the past working in such a program, especially with Batista and Big Show. If he and Strowman were to win the Raw Tag Team Titles, it is expected their run would be short-lived as the “Monster Among Men” could still be an integral part of the WWE main event picture. Roman Reigns is expected to defeat Brock Lesnar to claim the Universal Heavyweight Title. Strowman and Reigns worked a solid program late last year which helped put Strowman over as a WWE upstart.
