It is a play that happens in basketball often, a player runs out, jumps to contest a wide open shot. When an injury does occur a sprained ankle usually occurs. That wasn’t the case for Louisville sophomore guard Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome lower right leg injury.
With the Cardinals up four on Duke, Ware went up to contest a three-point attempt by Tyler Thornton and landed awkwardly on his right leg. It appeared from the moment he landed that the bone got broken.
Thornton while going back on defense saw the result and immediately turned away. Teammate Chane Behanan looked directly over and immediately went to the floor and got consoled by head coach Rick Pitino and the entire bench looked away.
Jim Nantz said “I don’t know if in basketball I’ve ever seen one like that.”
On Facebook there’s a picture with the hashtage #prayforware that got shared by Eric LeGrand and he also wrote “respect.”
On Twitter, Joe Theismann who is known for an injury that he suffered during his playing career in the NFL wrote this “Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware.”
Here’s a clip of the injury it is graphic. Also, surgery was successful and a rod has been inserted.
