After a two-week hiatus, welcome back to The Inscriber: Digital Magazine’s Sunday morning news roundup, The Byline Sunday Evening Report, will feature a compilation of news events that are current and relevant.
Short and sweet, The Byline Report will touch upon events with a blurb of facts and information, along with a small percentage of opinion.
Without further ado, here are the news events for Sunday morning, August 25h, that are making headlines:
Welsh newcomers, Cardiff City Shock Top English power, Manchester City 3-2 : Thanks to a late brace(that’s two goals in soccer jargon for you American soccer newbies) to help newly-promoted Welsh side, Cardiff City shock the English soccer world in toppling top-four side, Manchester City and their new high-priced transfer window acquisitions such as Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Alvaro Negrado and Roque Santa Cruz, and new manager Manuel Pellagrini 3-2.
With the win, Cardiff City secured their first win in 51 years back in England’s top division. To put it in layman’s terms, it would be the equivalent of the AAA Toledo Mud Hens being promoted to MLB and beating the New York Yankees on opening day.
Pop Star Katy Perry Accused Of Plagiarizing Sara Barielle’s Song, “Brave” : Mind you that nothing is official now, but allegations of pop star Katy Perry’s newly released single, “Roar” from her new album, “Prism”, burrowing from Sara Bareilles’ song “Brave” have caused endless questions and speculation about whether or not this is actually true, or a sign of true creativity and originality in pop music hitting an all-time low.
Ben Affleck Cast As New Batman in Man Of Steel Sequel : Yes, that is correct(and this is NOT a typo) Warner Bros would officially unveil the former Daredevil actor and Argo director as the new Bruce Wayne/Batman/Dark Knight late Thursday evening.
Almost immediately after the announcement, social media would practically implode and even lead to an online petition(signed by 10,000 people with no life!)to boycott/demand that the role be re-cast.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I am not a fan of Affleck being cast as the Dark Knight, but instead of worrying about how he will pull off Gotham’s finest, perhaps we should all wait and see how the rest of the Batman/Superman mega-blockbuster cast shapes up as rumors are also circulating via the blogosphere of Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad coming onboard as Lex Luthor, could add to the film.
Now, Zach Snyder directing? Better hope Michael Bay doesn’t call “dibs” instead.
Jets QB Mark Sanchez Hurts Shoulder : AS if the New York Jets on-going quarterback controversy/media circus needed another sideshow distraction, embattled starter, Mark Sanchez suffered a right shoulder injury, late in the fourth quarter of a pre-season overtime win over the New York Giants.
Yes, you read that right, a fifth-year NFL starting quarterback playing late in a PRESEASON game? My only question if I’m a Jets fan, is why in the name of Joe Namath was Sanchez out there in the first place?
I can understand in trying to restore some of Sanchez’s lost confidence and Geno Smith stinking up the joint in going 16-of-30 for 199 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and a Dan Orlovsky-worthy moment, but putting your starter in harm’s way in such a meaningless game against third and fourth-stringers of a pre-season game?
C’mon Sexy Rex, you know better than that.
News and Notes : Bills running back C.J. Spiller went down briefly during the Bills 30-7 pre-season loss to the Washington Redskins, would later return with a noticeable limp, according to media reports the former Clemson star appeared to have injure his right knee, and has since been declared as “OK” per the Buffalo Bills media staff.
Chelsea Land Willian, Eye Eto’o – Chelsea appear set to land Anzhi Makhachkala for a fee in the range of £30 million ($46.8 million)pending a work permit hearing and are also linked to be after Anzhi’s Samuel Eto’o as well. Another case of the rich getting richer on the pitch.
QB’s Terrelle Pryor and Vince Young Making Case For Spots : Backup quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor and Vince Young made cases for new roles in their respective teams, Pryor No.2 on the depth chart behind Matt Flynn in Oakland, helped ignite the Raiders in leading four scoring drives(two for touchdowns), while the highly-paid Flynn went 3-of-9 for 19 yards and tossed two interceptions, If the decision to start Pryor over Flynn isn’t clear enough for Oakland, then it will be another long season for the Silver & Black out in the Bay.
Young, the former AP NFL Offensive Rookie Of The Year in 2006, went 6-of-7 for 41 yards passing, one touchdown and three rushes for 39 yards in outperforming Graham Harrell—who would promptly be cut by the Packers in securing the No.2 spot behind Aaron Rodgers. Not bad for being out of football for one whole year, wouldn’t you say?
Raiders Cut PR/KR Joshua Cribbs – In what appears to be the end of his storied NFL career, former Cleveland Browns return specialist Joshua Cribbs has been cut by the Raiders. Cribbs, 30, who is currently tied the NFL record for most kickoff returns with eight with Leon Washington and tied with Ted Ginn Jr for most kickoff return touchdowns of 100+ yards in a single game with two, was released by the Browns in 2012.
After failing an off-season physical with the Arizona Cardinals, Cribbs signed a one-year partially guaranteed $1.25 million deal. In being cut, Cribbs received $225,000 of his deal and was due the remaining $865,000 in base salary.
