We have seen this before. For so many years, the Colorado Rockies perform like a contender up until the All-Star Break. Then the downfall begins. Will the same thing happen during the 2017 season? Are the Rockies a true contender in the National League?
Currently, the Colorado Rockies have the best record in the National League. They are two games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks in NL’s Western Division. They are also the only NL team with more than 30 wins. The Rockies are only one game behind the Houston Astros for the best record in baseball.
Have we seen this before? Yes! Have we seen on this level? No! The Rockies are playing some of the best baseball in franchise history. So what can we attribute to this rise to the top?
Certainly their pitching. Although they have a team ERA of 4.20, the Rockies staff is consistent. In the 48 games, thus far the Rockies starters are going deep into the game. They do not have to rely on their bullpen as in years past. In fact, the bullpen has converted 21 out of 24 save opportunities. Putting them first in the league.
The Colorado Rockies offense also has had a strong opening. They are sixth in batting average. However, they are second in the league in runs scored and in hits. Leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon leads the league with 63 hits. There are also two other Rockies in the top 10.
The consistency the Rockies are getting between the lines is the cause for the tremendous start. Manager Bud Black has been a quiet blessing. He has managed his rotation, kept players fresh, and has the Colorado Rockies in a place they unfamiliar with, First Place!
We will see what progresses throughout the season. However, this version of the Colorado Rockies is what fans have been longing for. A consistent, day in and day out ball club. One that can pride their fans to come to the ballpark. Finally, one that can call themselves a contender in the month of June!
